I just heard Starburster by Fontaines D.C. for the first time and I want to inject that song directly into my veins now. Holy shit.

@notgaetti My brother (5) and I (8) met Henry Aaron at the press entrance to Shea Stadium, 7/7/73. We were too intimidated to ask for an autograph so our Dad did and Mr. Aaron signed our scorecard.

@GreekGodOfHops @dreamsparkbb Baseball heaven! My son had the privilege of playing at Dreams Park in 2017. He’s 21 now and that week is still one of his fondest memories of travel ball. I had a fabulous time there as well!

@sigg20 One of my earliest memories is of my grandmother taking me to the corner candy store in The Bronx for a chocolate egg cream! Wish I had some Fox’s U-bet right now!

Sent in last word changes at 2 am, the acknowledgments (so many to thank) and received this from Cape Cod courtesy of Miss Sue Horton, gm, and Coach Kelly Nicholson who preside over my Orleans Firebirds. They are the best of baseball.

"Three times in his sensational career has Sandy Koufax walked out to the mound to pitch a fateful ninth where he turned in a no-hitter. But tonight, September the ninth, nineteen-hundred and sixty-five, he made the toughest walk of his career, I’m sure, because through eight innings he has pitched a perfect game. He has struck out 11, he has retired 24 consecutive batters, and the first man he will look at is catcher Chris Krug, big right-hand hitter, flied to second, grounded to short. Dick Tracewski is now at second base and Koufax ready and delivers: curveball for a strike. “It is 9:46 p.m,… 2-and-2 and count to Harvey Kuenn … one strike away … Sandy into his windup … here’s the pitch … swung on and missed … a perfect game! On the scoreboard in right field it is 9:46 p.m. in the City of the Angels, Los Angeles, California. And a crowd of 29,139 just sitting in to see the only pitcher in baseball history to hurl four no-hit, no-run games. Koufax has done it four straight years, and now he caps it: On his fourth no-hitter he made it a perfect game. And Sandy Koufax, whose name will always remind you of strikeouts, did it with a flourish. He struck out the last six consecutive batters. So, when he wrote his name in capital letters in the record books, that “K” stands out even more than the O-U-F-A-X." Vin Scully

@GreekGodOfHops Some of the best memories of travel ball were seeing the kids choose up sides for Wiffle Ball behind the hotel. Sometimes the parents played, too. Today when these young men talk about their experience it isn’t about a specific game or chips, it’s about fun times off the field.

"You see, the Mets are losers, just like nearly everybody else in life. This is a team for the cab driver who gets held up and the guy who loses out on a promotion because he didn't maneuver himself to lunch with the boss enough. It is the team for every guy who has to get out of bed in the morning and go to work for short money on a job he does not like. And it is the team for every woman who looks up ten years later and sees her husband eating dinner in a t-shirt and wonders how the hell she ever let this guy talk her into getting married. The Yankees? Who does well enough to root for them, Laurence Rockefeller?" "Can't Anybody Here Play This Game?: The Improbable Saga of the New York Mets' First Year" Jimmy Breslin A man who stands on Coogan's Bluff and looks down at the Polo Grounds, with a copy of the 1962 New York Mets program, the cover of which depicts the future home of the team, Shea Stadium.

@John_Fanta @team980 Odd how the NCAA went from ridiculously restrictive rules like you can’t buy an athlete a cup of coffee to the Wild West, where everything goes, with no thought given to consequences. Time for the pendulum to swing back to the middle.

“The transfer portal is crazy. There are kids asking for $2-3 million right now. The money has exploded crazy because we have no guardrails. We have no rules. It’s been as badly of a rule implemented as ever. And agents are taking advantage of it.” — Kevin Willard on @team980

@TomPenders I would’ve liked to see RJ on the floor because as I said to my son, if he makes a couple of 3’s to tie or for the lead no one would remember 3-17, but it’s possible Pitino was playing the long game with him. Hope he stays for one more.

How many and who will come back? Don’t count the Walton’s or managers! RJ Luis didn’t look to happy in the last 5 minutes sitting next to the Gatorade. If he has another year. The vitamin water booster might be reluctant to spread the Benjamin’s!

@MikeVacc All the misses and missed 2nd chances were tough to watch. They just couldn’t pull even. Hard to do when you miss 54 shots! It’s deflating. Hopefully they can mount up and make another run next year.

Column: the end hits hard and it cuts deep. All the concerns lurking behind a magical season for St. John’s dropped like an anvil from the roof. No more magic. No more season. #SJUBB nypost.com/2025/03/22/spo…
