Initial reaction to Roy deal: great for Leafs, and maybe building block one of a proper direction. Sell all the maybe guys (as I wrote last week!) and have a stockpile to use towards legitimate name players at draft. That would be a legit “retool,” but lot of execution ahead.

Every player’s cap hit gets charged daily, not all at once. Every day, whatever you don't spend, gets banked. At the trade deadline, there are very few days left (say a quarter of the season) so adding a player only “costs” you a tiny slice of their yearly cap hit. A player with a $8M AAV only “costs” about $2M of cap space for the rest of the season. Flip that around - if you have (banked + remaining) $15M cap space for the last quarter of the season, that works out to $60M in space. Now - With the rule changes this season, deadline cap space is less important than it used to be. Because your lineup needs to be cap compliant every day in the playoffs.
