Regarding the energy rebate: Means testing things cost a lot of money, and it's often not worth the effort. Better just to throw the cash. Then you can do it at the energy provider level without having to marry up tax data (which would be a nightmare and dangerous) #Budget2024

@tresantes sometimes the docks build up a static charge which mess up the docking process. But there's lots of things that can go wrong because the system is full of complex bits that all need to work. It's a bit of a wonder that computer systems work at all

Does anyone have any theories as to why my work laptop won’t log in first thing in the morning when docked (I have to log in undocked and then dock for it to work)

Does @abcnews imagine that none of us notice their failure to mention that #Israel attacked #Isranian embassy - an essential fact that directly led to Iranian retaliation -

Mike Pezzullo, the now-sacked Home Affairs secretary, turned out to be what so many national security bureaucrats are: a hypocrite who leaked but wanted other leakers thrown in jail, writes Bernard Keane. The break-up of his department should follow. crikey.com.au/2023/11/27/hyp…

A further development could be for the big Super funds to offer mortgages to compete with banks that allow a member's super to be offset against interest the same way. That would also increase market competition, lowering interest rates. #auspol

Provided the super funds can somehow be preserved in the offset account, and not drawn on for any other purpose, this is actually not a bad idea from @ajamesbragg. The interest saved though should be allocated against the super, not general income. #auspol #Echobox=1700964832" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">afr.com/policy/tax-and…

Peter Dutton and the Liberals continually slashed funding to Home Affairs. In contrast, we're investing in our agencies to provide them the tools they need to keep the community safe.

@quite_majority @Marcus78216830 So our falling birth rate, reducing tax base, shortage of skilled workers are part of our economic situation. Do you know what our 3rd largest export is? International education. Migration's complex & it's not a cure all but I haven't seen sound reasoning for all the negativity

Labor can trumpet what they've done as much as they like. The fact is, many struggling people can't feel it. Incrementalism doesn't appear to be working. Many can't afford food, rent, or healthcare, while the rich are doing just fine. And it's going to cost them.

.@MarkDreyfusKCMP has announced appointments of new FOI and Privacy Commissioners. It’s a good step, but where’s the serious money and resources to clear a huge #FOI backlog and fix a broken system. On its own this looks like window dressing to me. #auspol ministers.ag.gov.au/media-centre/f…

So, Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo has been sacked today shortly after the Remuneration Tribunal changed the rules on payouts for exiting public servants. Good to see some swift action from them following my questions in Estimates about payouts for wrongdoers.

Debates about curriculum are a sideshow. Want to end educational inequality? Ensure every child can access a well-resourced and inclusive public school! The idea that tweaking the curriculum would magically reverse decades of public system neglect is a technocratic fantasy.

@crikey_news @mckinnon_a Why is anger towards labor growing. The ALP opposes the invasion, called for a cease fire, condemned the attacks on non-combatants, used diplomatic pressure. Individual ALP MPs have spoken forcefully. The greens party, posture & point score, but the ALP are the baddies.
