This is the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup. This was the World Cup everyone claimed Qatar couldn't pull off, but they ended up hosting arguably the best, most organised World Cup in recent memory. The Quran recitation and the calm atmosphere gave it a unique feel never seen before. Now, we wait to see what the upcoming tournament in North America will bring. The bar has been set incredibly high, and it is going to take a lot more than the usual American corporate and media hype to match this level of soul and standard.

Many of us have trained ourselves to treat every differing opinion or feedback as a personal assault that must be fiercely defended or countered. But do we get to pause to think that not every critic is an enemy. Not all criticisms and attacks come from a bad place. Some speak from genuine concern, lived experience, or a desire to see you grow. Others simply hold a different lens. The mature response isn’t always defence or agitation. Sometimes it’s quiet reflection. Good faith criticism is a gift if you’re secure enough to receive it. And even poorly delivered ones can contain seeds of truth worth introspecting on. Protect your peace, yes. But don’t build walls so high that wisdom can’t reach you, no matter how highly educated or rated you think you are. Good morning my yard people.

One category of people I struggle to take seriously are those who speak from both sides of their mouth. One minute, you claim you do not support mass weddings. The next minute, you are busy comparing societal evils to determine which one is more acceptable. So because fornication exists in parts of the South and West, the answer is to normalize and celebrate systems that continue to produce thousands of children whose parents lack the means, preparation or support structures to raise them adequately? So you won't bother to sweep your house because your neighbour's house is more dirty? How exactly does one social problem become the justification for another? This is the part I find intellectually dishonest. If you support something, own it with your full chest. Defend it. Explain its merits. Present the evidence. But please do not pretend to oppose it while simultaneously constructing arguments in its defence. Some of us will disagree with you because we are capable of identifying contradictions when we see them. The unfortunate thing about public discourse today is that many people have become so accustomed to speaking to audiences that never question them that they become irritated the moment someone does. May Allah never place our livelihood in a position where truth becomes too expensive to speak.

200 level (2015/16), Faculty of Law, Benue State University, I was the best Islamic law student. I was so good my scripts were used by my juniors sets after as the precedent for answering questions in Islamic law. 500level (2019/2020), my project was the only one on Islamic law. My uncle begged me to write on Company law because I was really good at it. I said no and followed my passion for Islamic law. My topic was on the doctrine of Ijbar (child marriage). I went on countless interviews within the Muslim communities in Benue for this and the witness testimonies I got till date still make me sad. We were even warned to stop talking to their wives and daughters in Katungu (Makurdi people will know Katungu and how notorious it is). I can tell you people in the SW for a fact that you had better fight Sharia law with everything in you especially your women. This is not a time to be doing online bigotry anymore. Sharia (Islamic Law) is the easiest law to use to perpetuate human rights abuses. Hudud Offenses alone will wipe out Lagos state. First off Zina (adultery and fornication). Alfa just needs to say Modupe the slay queen is guilty of Zina and she will be stoned. You’ll see how the non Yoruba Muslims will execute this sharp sharp. Or is it Shurb al-Khamr (drinking), all of you Yoruba Muslims that drink more than Christian’s, ministers in the temple of Quilox and other clubs, they will flog you at least 40 strokes o. Or is it Riddah (denouncing Islam). LOL. Just write your will first before you follow your Christian family to church because the punishment ranges from death to amputation (if they want to be nice). Better fight o, because una go too chop kwa kwa.

My theory about Muslims claiming their tribe comes first before Islam is that they are ignorant of the basic tenets of their deen. They are in the same category with the people that say, “Humanity before religion “ as per your religion is inhumane?

My theory is that about half of those Yoruba Muslims claiming Islam first are from Ilorin. I lived there for a few years during my childhood and also went to the University there.
