One of my friends cleared JEE last year. She's genuinely good at studies and worked really hard for it. She got around a 14xxx rank in JEE Advanced and got into a good IIT. She's been in coaching since class 5 and her brother is also an IITian. I couldn't clear JEE and ended up in a tier-3 college. We've still remained friends though. I've always respected what she achieved and honestly never felt jealous of it. If anything, I looked up to her. Today we were just talking randomly and I mentioned that my college doesn't have great placement opportunities and the average package is pretty low. I wasn't even ranting or anything, just saying it casually. Her immediate response was, "Lol suffer. Why didn't you clear JEE? You were busy doing irrelevant stuff during preparation." That kinda stung. I genuinely gave it my best back then. Maybe it wasn't enough, maybe I made mistakes, but it's not like I never tried. So I told her that it's great she's in an IIT, but why make it sound like people from tier-3 colleges are doomed or something. Then she said, "Why shouldn't I flaunt my IIT tag? I worked hard for it. I have every right to. I'm an IITian. Don't be jealous of me." Honestly that part shocked me more than anything else. The thing is, I was never upset about her being proud of getting into an IIT. She absolutely should be proud of it. It's a huge achievement. What bothered me was the way she said it and the complete lack of respect. Maybe I'm overthinking this, idk. But why do some people act like clearing one exam means they've achieved everything in life? IIT is a massive achievement, no doubt, but after that people still have to work for internships, placements, jobs, careers, etc. Was I overreacting here or was she actually rude ?
