It is the work of someone who got far enough away from her own machinery to want to come back to it on different terms. Petal is the next chapter of that. She is releasing it on her own label, BabyDoll Music, with executive-production credit she did not have on the earlier records. The contractions in her current single's lyrics, which break the careful pop-diction rules she used to follow, are the public sound of a person who came back to music having decided she would only do it her way. The pop-dominant version was the one she was trying to escape. The version she is now is the one she chose.

Backrooms and Obsession must be bringing in a lot of people who don't usually go to theaters because half of my timeline is people discovering how bad theater etiquette is now.
