I was a mess in the first photo, taken in 2021. Obese. Purposeless. Completely lost. I spent my 20s with a singular focus: becoming one of the most accomplished tournament poker players in the world. For years, everything revolved around that pursuit. When I transitioned from playing full time, other undertakings felt dull by comparison. Normal life couldn’t compete with that level of intensity. The pressure. The stakes. The demand for total presence. Without realizing it, I stopped trying to replace that focus and slipped into lethargy and indulgence in self-pity. As my weight went up, the standards dropped. I stopped doing the things I said I would do. Once that happened, everything felt optional. Self-respect eroded and the life in my years lost some of its juice. I knew exactly what to do and how to do it. I was just in the worst possible state to act. I’ve always been good at doing simple things that aren’t easy. I had just stopped doing them. I put everything else to the side, defined a clear target and attacked it relentlessly. Motivation was gone. So I acted anyway. Each action became a vote for the person I was becoming. Action created momentum. Momentum restored agency. Agency rebuilt self-esteem. After spending 6 months in Bali and getting in reasonable shape, I noticed myself slipping back into my old ways. I reached out to @bp22 and asked him if he'd take a bet where I had to lose a significant amount of weight by my 40th birthday on April 16th. The terms of the bet were as follows: - 300k wager - 175 days (landing exactly on my 40th birthday) - Get Under 12% Body Fat (at the time I was 25% body fat and 103.4 KG) At the halfway point, with 80 days remaining, a DEXA on day 90 put me at 15.5% body fat and 90.7 kilos. I’ve never felt better. I’m in the best shape of my life going into my 40s. Singular focus changes everything.
