Excitement to heartbreak after testing revealed there was swelling in the head and body wall, a heart defect and a tumor on the abdomen that was about one-third the size of the fetus and growing. A report from her physician confirmed the doctor had "conveyed the high likelihood that the findings may lead to an intrauterine demise [of the fetus] due to heart failure or neonatal demise." Due to the medical conditions of Shannon’s fetus, her physician believed the hospital would provide her with abortion care despite Alabama law prohibiting abortions at all stages of pregnancy. Shannon and her husband filled out the necessary paperwork. The abortion had to be approved by several hospital committees. Stop for a moment. You have devastating news about your pregnancy and you have to fill out paperwork and let strange non-involved parties make decisions impacting your entire life. Her physician had to give the devastating news. One committee approved the medical procedure, but a higher committee denied it. Not only did this impact Shannon, it impacted her physician, who called her husband immediately distraught. Shannon eventually had to drive to Richmond, Virginia, to access abortion care.
