Alabama’s top two lawmakers welcomed Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court order vacating the federal injunctions on the state’s congressional map. Both Speaker @RepLedbetter and Pro Tem @GarlanGudgerJr pointed to last week’s special session as a move that has put Alabama in an immediate position to act the moment the high court ruled. Alabama’s 2023 congressional map currently has a Section 2 VRA and 14th Amendment violation against it. I simply stated that we want those violations lifted so we can move forward with our 2023 congressional map, not that the 14th Amendment needs to be removed from the U.S. Constitution. This is a total lie and is refuted by my comments in Friday’s press conference, which are on video for anyone to see. Unfortunately, this blatant attempt to misconstrue my comments, cause division, and attack my character is a perfect example of why people struggle to trust certain media outlets in this day and age. The Alabama House of Representatives has adjourned its Special Session and put a contingency plan in place if SCOTUS or a lower court lifts its injunction. The moment we get relief, Alabama will be ready to act. Full statement below: “For the last five days, House Republicans have stood firm on the fact that our state’s current, court-imposed Congressional Map is nothing more than a racially gerrymandered disgrace that does not represent the conservative values held by Alabamians. We have fought back against insults and attacks on our character from the left, not by feeding into their rhetoric, but by sending a loud and clear message with our votes. Our combined efforts have yielded real results. If Alabama’s unlawful injunction is lifted by SCOTUS or a lower court before the federal primary election deadline, the state now has a plan in place to revert to the Legislature’s 2023 map. This guarantees that the Second Congressional District – which was wrongfully handed to democrats on a silver platter by the courts – is flipped back to republican control while also putting the Seventh Congressional District in play. As much as we would have preferred to draw a new map like our neighbors in Tennessee, the legal constraints created by Allen v. Milligan make that impossible today. Any other course of action would have all but guaranteed Alabama sends two Democrats to Congress at a time when control of the U.S. House could be decided by only a handful of seats – an outcome that our country cannot afford. Alabama has done its part in helping President Trump maintain a republican Congress, and we will continue fighting to ensure that our elections are decided by Alabamians, not activist judges.”

Joint statement from Senate President Pro Tem @GarlanGudgerJr and me below: “After extensive dialogue and careful planning among Alabama’s legislative leadership and Governor Ivey, we are grateful for the opportunity to convene in a special session to address the issue of redistricting. Governor Ivey is right: while SCOTUS delivered a landmark victory for conservatives, Alabama’s situation is unlike many other states, as we are under a court order preventing the State Legislature from redrawing congressional maps until 2030. With that said, we can and will set a contingency plan in place for our state’s primary elections should the U.S. Supreme Court remand Alabama’s current case to a lower court with clear instructions to apply the Callais ruling. While there are no guarantees that Alabama’s now unlawful, court mandated roadblock will be removed in time, we have a responsibility to give our state a fighting chance to send seven republican members to Congress. Control of the U.S. House of Representatives could come down to just a handful of seats, and when the dust settles, the people of Alabama will know that their Legislature stood firm, acted decisively, and did everything within its power to fight for fair representation.”

Alabama’s sales tax holiday on groceries goes into effect today. I’m proud of our efforts to provide tax relief for Alabamians and am committed to ensuring that, in the near future, our state’s grocery tax—which has already been cut in half—is completely done away with.

Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision proves what we have known all along – that court-ordered redistricting has become nothing more than a vehicle for Democrats to win elections in courtrooms instead of at the ballot box. Read my full statement ⬇️

15 years ago, tornadoes devastated much of North Alabama and claimed 35 lives here in DeKalb County. It was a tragic day for our community and our state, but in true Alabama fashion, we came together and helped our neighbors when they needed it most. Let us never forget the lives lost, the strength we found in one another, and the resilience that carried us forward.

Grateful for the safety of President Trump and the attendees at the White House Correspondents Dinner. God bless our Secret Service and the other law enforcement professionals on hand.

Proud to deliver real progress on affordability when Alabamians needed it most. $1.5 billion in tax cuts over four years marks the largest run in state history, and I look forward to continuing this important work next session.

Today is Tax Day, and I’m proud that the Legislature has cut over $1.5B in taxes over the last four years. I’m also proud to know that, at $4,722, Alabama has the nation’s LOWEST overall state and local tax collections, the nation’s LOWEST property taxes, & ranks top five for affordability.

Happy Lineman Appreciation Day to the men and women who keep the lights on in Alabama. As someone who once did the job, I can tell you nothing about it is easy - and almost everything about it is dangerous. Stay safe out there, and thank you for all you do.
