The metric that defines enterprise AI just changed. In 2024: cost per token. In 2026: cost per successfully completed task. That shift exposes something the industry has been hiding. The average cost per autonomous agent task: $0.50 to $5.00. Sounds manageable. Until you factor in the failure rate. 88% of agent tasks never reach successful completion. So the real cost per completed task isn't $0.50. It's $0.50 divided by 0.12. It's $4.17. On the low end. Every retry loop. Every drift. Every stall. It's not free compute. Exactly. The delegation promise is what made autonomous workflows worth building in the first place. The moment a team has to watch for loops instead of trusting the system to finish, you haven't automated the workflow-- you've just moved the supervision tax from the task to the agent monitoring the task. The trust gap and the convergence gap are the same gap. When a workflow stops converging reliably, the human steps back in. And the moment the human steps back in, the ROI case collapses. That's why the finishing layer isn't a nice to have. It's what the delegation promise requires to be real. And from a behavioural standpoint-- once trust breaks, rebuilding it at scale is a different problem entirely.

That history doesn't live in the model. It lives in the runtime. And it compounds in ways the model provider will never have access to because it's built from your workflows, your failure signatures, your convergence patterns. The organism is yours. That's the IP.

Fair, step 0 intent failure is real and kills workflows before convergence becomes relevant. But the 78% invisible failure paper is specifically about the failures that pass step 0. The agent understood the task. It started correctly. And then something happened in the middle-- a loop, a drift, a resource decision-- that nobody saw because the system reported healthy the whole time. Those two failure modes aren't competing. They're sequential. Boundary judgment gets you past step 0. Convergence governance gets you to completion. What does step 5 look like in your 8-agent setup when one of them starts retrying silently?
