If it’s already time for a post-mortem: Ukraine massively over-performed. Obviously the people who thought Ukraine should kneel to the right of the stronger before the war began because Russia could conquer Ukraine in two weeks were proved wrong at the very beginning of the war, but lots of very reasonable people who believed that Ukraine was eventually going to be ground down in a war of attrition because of Russia’s vastly greater manpower were also wrong. Even many people who were sympathetic to Ukraine and optimistic about their chances were imagining them lasting out a three-year war, after which Russia might decide the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze and give up. The fifth year of war with the battlelines locked in place near the Russian border and Ukrainian offensive projection abilities into Russia growing by the month is a genuinely impressive showing by the Ukies, despite the tragic loss of life on all sides.

A modern day Civil War would be the bloodiest and worst possible outcome for America. It wouldn't be two clearly defined sides like in 1861. It would be many different factions all at each other's throats. Neighbors killing neighbors for moldy bread when the grocery trucks stop making deliveries. People dying in hospitals because the power infrastructure was destroyed. It would be a scale of death and destruction that America has never seen. It is best avoided at all costs.
