I never take for granted how those three letters feel because I know exactly what it cost to get here, EdD.
This journey didn’t start in a classroom. It started on a football field in Dallas, Texas a kid from Lincoln High School with a dream bigger than his circumstances. It continued through the hallways of Louisiana Tech, where I learned what it meant to compete at the next level. Three ACL injuries each one a moment that could have defined my limits, but instead refined my resolve.
I lived in the locker rooms at Molina, Skyline, Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Lincoln, and North Dallas and Conrad, where I poured into young men who needed someone to believe in them before they believed in themselves. 42 college scholarships. Countless lives changed. That was never just coaching. That was calling.
It showed up in the late nights after long days as an Athletic Coordinator, an Assistant Director, and now as Director of Athletics at DeSoto ISD still learning, still leading, still serving.
And through all of it every setback, every surgery, every season of doubt God was the constant. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9
That scripture carried me into rooms I wasn’t sure I belonged in. Into a doctoral program at Liberty University that challenged everything I thought I knew about leadership, systems, and self.
Today, I stand on the other side of that journey.
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from Liberty University. To every coach, player, colleague, and mentor who poured into me along the way, this belongs to us.
If you’re in the middle of your storm right now, I need you to hear this: don’t stop. Chop the wood. Carry the water. Do the work nobody sees, so the world can witness what God ordains.
The doctorate is done. The mission continues. 🙏🏾🙏🏾

I put these two clips of Daddy together because I want to share him saying “I’m tired of marching,” then, after continuing the multifaceted work of nonviolence, saying “I’ve been to the mountaintop.”
The 2nd clip is from the speech he gave the night before he was assassinated.

As a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Viola Ford Fletcher bravely shared her story so that we’d never forget this painful part of our history. Michelle and I are grateful for her lifelong work to advance civil rights, and send our love to her family. nytimes.com/2025/11/24/us/…
