I analysed 14 million YouTube finance videos to find out what actually works.
Here's what separates the top 1% from everyone else:
1. Pick the right sub niche
Most finance creators go straight into investing, market news or trading.
Which is great if you have a unique angle.
But it's very competitive.
Here are the sub niches with low supply and high demand:
- Case studies and analysis.
612 videos, 87.3k median views and 29x the niche median with almost zero competition.
- Financial literacy
P99 ceiling of 619k views with only 11k videos.
Highest ceiling of major sub-niches.
- Options education
6.1k median views. Highest median of any sub niche.
Only 372 videos.
Pick 1 and own it before somebody else does.
2. Write longer titles
The "keep it short" rule is wrong in finance.
Titles with 14 or more words get a 6.4% lift.
Title formula:
- Use "You" or "Your" in every title for a 22.2% lift
- Keep it 91 to 110 characters
- Use these power words: stealth (1.53x), discover (1.69x), formula (1.49x), greatest (1.68x)
Avoid questions, years or ALL CAPS.
All 3 hurt performance
3. Open with a bold claim
57k finance videos open with a greeting.
Only 2,433 open with a bold claim.
Bold claim hooks get a 23% lift and are 70x underused.
The top 1% match the title promise in the hook.
Open with a provocative statement that forces the viewer to stay.
Then deliver on it within the first 18 seconds.
4. Thumbnail formula
- 1 to 2 faces with shocked expressions
- Dark high contrast background
- 1 to 3 words of text
- Include a financial element (chart, $, arrow)
- Real photos only, illustrations underperform by 4.8%
5. Post 4 videos/week at 15 to 22 minutes
The 5 to 10 minute safe zone is the worst performing duration in finance.
Go long at 15 to 22 minutes.
Sweet spot is 3 to 7 videos per week at 55.7k average views per video.
14+ videos per week drops to 7k average views.
Follow these formula's and you'll be ahead of 99% of finance creators.
