$24M undersea fibre-optic cable being built to bring better internet to Haida Gwaii The new cable from Kitimat to the B.C. archipelago will add resiliency for the 4,500 residents and end long outages that can last weeks or months impacting 911, education and businesses. The current cable gets damaged several times a year, especially in winter with treacherous repairs in Hecate Strait. The project is funded by Northern Development Initiative Trust and managed by community-owned GwaiiTel. Haida Nation president Gaagwiis Jason Alsop says it’s good for local artists and small businesses. GwaiiTel chair Sam Hall calls it the first stage for improving connectivity along B.C. north coast with better public safety like emergency alerts. Installation starts spring 2027 with full completion by winter.
