Melissa Barrera reveals that director Boots Riley reached out to show his support and offered her a role in ‘I LOVE BOOSTERS.’ “I had ten torturous months of uncertainty, and no work, and suffering, and not even knowing if my team was on my side, it was terrible — and Boots sent me a message in August of 2024 and was like, ‘I got a part for you in my movie.’ And he offered me a part in ‘I Love Boosters.’ And for some reason, once Boots sent me that message, I suddenly had five messages with offers in my inbox. It’s like he flipped a switch. I call him ‘The Wizard.’ The energy shifted. Her albums tell stories. I always say I love artists like her, SZA & Summer because they’re not afraid to take it there and expose their shadows. They make music for the highs and lows and in between.
Statements like this defeat the purpose. I feel as artists and creative people, honoring your “unhealed” eras is apart of our process and the journey. Why reject it now? Or make your fans who aren’t there yet, feel bad….

you can tell this was a watered down version of RAYE because it is HER in label-puppet mode. The label didn’t trust her/allow her to follow her own musical directions, hence she wasn’t even trusted to be raw and unfiltered. even the critics were not nice to this productions, they saw her actual potential she was holding back- called EUPHORIC SAD SONGS generic mordern pop production that feels pleasant, bouyant and radio friendly copy and paste kind of album. This was boring/uninspiring to listen to because you can tell/hear that she is capable of more.
So, for people on here to to call her perfomative and corny is kind of baseless. I would advise them to go back into her discography, and actually listen to RAYE before she went independent.
The sound was polished, and very much safe tbh. When she broke off from the record label, that’s where unhinged storytelling began, wild vocal range, way more personality and pain. She got REAL.
NOW, let me go back to listening to THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.
