Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens. And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people.

@chrislhayes This is really serious? Build an “iron dome missile shield “ that will cover all of America and “prevent WWIII? Just trying to work out the logistics of the former … and as for the latter… actually, how is this a platform?

Today I released this statement, urging congress to amend FECA to eliminate the public disclosure of contributor street names and street numbers. I urge Congress to maintain the requirement that political committees collect and report the full mailing addresses to the @FEC, but only require that the we publish the contributors’ name, city, state, zip code, occupation, and employer. fec.gov/resources/cms-…

A little late on the repost but too important not to reiterate. One of our most profound forms of protest has been the “sit in” — the placement of our bodies in a space in order to peacefully express ourselves—to protest.
Chris Hayes@chrislhayes

I feel like I'm losing my mind a little: people understand that "occupying buildings on campus" is, like, one of the most common forms of studen protest for decades and not some devious new ploy devised by professional anarchist plotters, right?

@Nicole_Lee_Sch The shame goes to those who refused to stand with me and support me. Your colleagues should know better. (Some of mine had even taken a course on rhetorics of disability with me) I’m so proud of you and I’m glad to know you.

@Nicole_Lee_Sch I left academia because the consistent violation of my rights and the lack of support caused my health to deteriorate. It was physically dangerous with my epilepsy but it was always emotionally damaging. I felt ashamed for not fighting harder. But the shame wasn’t mine …

I want to pretend that after a decade of working in academia I would be used to people just blatantly disregarding ADA law and talking about my accommodation needs blithely but god it still hurts.

Whelp. Thanks so much #ElonMusk for absolutely ruining my favorite social platform. In addition to all the awfulness you’ve allowed, somehow an entire year of my #bookreviews never posted.
