@TheWritingRevol Hey @TheWritingRevol , I'm enjoying the new tool. I work with 8th grade and secondary students who need to cite evidence from the text (specific quotes). Do you have any scaffolds to help them do this effectively?

@rpondiscio Curious whether you read the Times article, and if so what your reaction was.

I’d love to read accounts of Walz’s days as a social studies teacher, the curriculum he used, his students’ perceptions of his presentation, biases, etc.
Aaron Pellish@aaronpellish

New: @Tim_Walz calls for eliminating the Electoral College during a fundraiser at Gavin Newsom's private residence in Sacramento. "I think all of us know the electoral college needs to go," per a pool report. "We need national popular vote, but that's not the world we live in."

If you had to guess, based on your own experience, what percentage of kids who go on to college made it through MS and HS without ever reading an entire novel cover to cover?

@mpershan I think it’s a semi-frequent math circle topic? Worth searching for “math circle modular arithmetic”, quick hit math.uci.edu/~mathcircle/ma… but likely various versions out there for older/younger. Can check my physical books tomorrow.

Hey math teachers, are there good sheets for learning about modular arithmetic? For middle schoolers?

@MrLandesman FYI -- the free curriculum you can download here coreknowledge.org/download-free-… is...also Illustrative Math. It was developed as an OER and not commercial. (screenshot from Core Knowledge Grade 5 materials.) I could be wrong but I don't think any IM version is commercial.

"The commercial curriculum — which forces teachers to give scripted lessons on a rigid schedule, expects students to “discover” solutions with little instruction, and frustrates kids lacking prerequisite skills — is partly to blame." nypost.com/2024/08/17/us-…

@mpershan This is a decent game to play with AI.

Let's try this: you tell me whatever you're in the mood to read, and I'll recommend Anna Karenina.

@LaneWalker2 (Also worth usual caveat DI as an instructional method vs a curriculum gets conflated often, as an instructional method alone it’s especially difficult to isolate and quantify effects)

@LaneWalker2 Anecdotally, seen similar in math—my feeling is that more often that not it raises the floor, but has less effect on the ceiling. Overall more depends on the teacher and other variables.

Can someone explain to me how students tend to do on standardized tests when they have mostly experienced direct instruction?

@benorlin Choose your fighter: "“If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.” -E.M. Forster "…whoever places a friend / above the good of his country, he is nothing: / I have no use for him" -Sophocles

@dylanpkane I remember this being really tricky for kids! I tried to have them do some extra practice on Khan and they totally bombed. Concept was hard enough, but also added "constant of proportionality" lang. I wrote at a least a dozen scaffolded practice activities--did one/day for weeks

@mpershan But: a) I’m not sure if that’s still true or not, and b) seems like schools increasingly go free/open-source/teacher-created resources for curriculum, so I’m not sure how much it matters even if true

@mpershan (That’s one way the math framework used to have teeth: curriculum that doesn’t align doesn’t get approved, which means public school districts can’t buy it with state $.) 2/
