@richbarrac Fred Astaire in honored with the 9th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Film Institute at Hollywood banquet on April 09, 1981. When Hitchcock won his Lifetime Achievement award in 1979, he joked with friends that he must be about to die soon. He died April 29, 1980

The American Film Institute Awards, March 16, 1980. Hitchcock last public appearance before dying the next month of kidney failure. Unfortunately, a dying man not recognizing the star of his 1964 film, Marnie.

@hazelflag I agree with that but I don’t see the same dissolution of their performances as I do with Ginger Roger’s, again someone who I admire greatly thru the 30s and early 40s

@richbarrac Almost every female superstar of the 1930s had, by the mid-1940s, started losing her clout. The same can be said of Colbert, Dunne, Bennett, Hopkins, Dietrich, and—to a certain extent—Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck as well.

One movie a day for 365 days. 300/365. Lady in the Dark is one of those movies that never met with wide approval. Yet there’s something irresistible about this Leisen extravaganza, where color, music, and Ginger’s nightmares blend rather fitfully. She sings The Saga of Jenny.

@RasberryRazz VERTIGO is my favorite film and the audience always laughs when Scottie tells her the color of her hair couldn’t matter to her. I always laugh too. Not in a “this is so stupid” way but at the total unawareness of Scottie and his actions.

Hate how the one time I saw this in theaters people were snickering at Judy’s plight and Scottie’s desperation to make her into his phantom lover. This scene is an agonizing example of human culpability to become monstrous by way of obsession and recapturing something lost.
Manu@manuthebest58

In the store, Judy, realizing that Scottie is transforming her into Madeleine, makes to go, and bumps into a mirror. Scottie joins her in front of the mirror. A fabulous shot shows us ‘all four of them’ together: he and his double, she and her double.

Leo G. Carroll. (October 25, 1886 – October 16, 1972) He was a British character actor. In a career of more than 40 years, he appeared in six Hitchcock films and in three television series, Topper, Going My Way, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

@richbarrac @hazelflag You are right. It was Allan Jones, whom the Marx Brothers hated less than Tony Martin & Kenny Baker for cluttering their movies with pointless songs & plot

Rewatching, after a long time, The Great Ziegfeld—what a catastrophe. Powell and especially Loy should have sued MGM for serving them such a turkey, marred by elaborate and inane "musical" numbers, paper-thin characters, mammoth running time, and Luise Rainer acting demented.

@hazelflag I've always been fascinated by the fact that Dennis Morgan is on the screen singing A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody, but he is dubbed by Tony Martin. MGM's loss was clearly Warners' gain. Unless somebody can show me the errors of my ways, Martin will always be Mr. Cyd Charisse

@hazelflag The score is one of the worst for any Astaire film and HIGHLAND FLING and WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY are beneath them. My least favorite A&R film but their non-fighting scenes as a long married couple are definitely charming.

One movie a day for 365 days. 264/365. The Barkleys of Broadway is almost as good as black and white Ginger and Fred. True, it lacks that carefree spirit that was essential to their 30s films, but the magic was not gone. And they do They Can't Take that Away from Me again. So...

Did you know... Julie made a cameo appearance as a hotel maid in "The Return of the Pink Panther"? Unfortunately the scene was cut from the 1975 film, but we're glad we've got the pictures to imagine it 😉

I’m going to say it: I don’t understand the love for SWING TIME. The only Astaire and Rogers on Criterion, one of the only ones with regular screenings and discussions, but also the only one with blackface and easily avoided when you consider their other nine incredible pairings.

@classic_film The scene for Hopelessly Devoted isn't as fun as the scenes with the other songs, but as a stand-alone pop song, it's the best. Olivia Newton John had a beautiful voice.

Melanie is inside the phone booth. She’s in a cage! The roles have again been reversed. The human beings are in cages and the birds are on the outside. Just as Mitch foreshadowed at the pet shop, “Back in your gilded cage, Melanie Daniels.”

Despite Alfred Hitchcock's initial hesitation to work with a contract player, Star of the Month Ruth Roman's magnetic performance in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN ('51) remains one of her most critically acclaimed roles. See it as part of tonight's Star of the Month lineup at 8pm ET.
