The Restoration of HMS Implacable.
Painting by Robert Borlase Smart (1881–1947).
NMM, Greenwich, London (ID: BHC3415)
HMS Implacable began her life as Duguay-Trouin, a French Téméraire-class 74-gun third rate launched in 1800. Though she survived Trafalgar, she fell into British hands soon afterwards at the Battle of Cape Ortegal. Entering Royal Navy service under her new name, she took part in the Baltic campaign of 1808, notably in the capture of the Imperial Russian 74-gun ship Vsevolod during the Anglo-Russian War. She later served as a training vessel and, in time, became the Royal Navy’s second-oldest ship after HMS Victory, Nelson’s Trafalgar flagship. When the Navy finally scuttled her in 1949, she went to her end flying the French and British colours side by side.

I sailed across the Solent this morning to the Isle of Wight, over the bones of dinosaurs, Roman flagons, Tudor shipwrecks and Napoleonic cannons, on water that took Queen Victoria on the last journey she ever made
Now I’m off to find fossils then I’m speaking @IOWLF tomorrow
