Simulating a political opening while pushing a bill with many flaws and vague provisions that shield the repressors rather than delivering justice. @AndreaMesaN dives into the proposed amnesty bill in #Venezuela.
Caracas Chronicles@CaracasChron

Venezuela’s amnesty bill has serious flaws: it could exclude unjustly imprisoned military personnel, leave enforcement to repressive institutions, and erase legal records. It still remains a big opportunity for society, @AndreaMesaN writes. Analysis👇 caracaschronicles.com/2026/02/09/ven…

Venezuelan scholars have witnessed and went through years of state-sponsored violence, destruction and impunity. They saw countless people suffer thru dictatorship, including loved ones. They learned by lived experience. Platform them. Support them. Most importantly, listen.

On the news regarding the release of political prisoners in Venezuela. I recommend following @ForoPenal. Their work documenting human rights abuses and defending political prisoners is superb. Their directors, @alfredoromero and @HimiobSantome, are tweeting about the situation.

It feels a bit surreal to get opinion requests on Venezuela from the New York Times, WSJ, BBC, and CNN all in one day. I'm happy to see my analysis in X reaching a broad audience :)

My column on Venezuela in @TheEconomist “Prosperity does not come from oil, decrees or even benevolent rulers. It comes from rights. Rights create private property. Rights create security. Rights create debate. Rights allow people to invest, to innovate, to dream—and to transform reality. Take rights away, and society withers. Restore them, and recovery is possible.” economist.com/by-invitation/…

🫓At least 7 journalists have been taken by government security forces today in Venezuela (3 were released). Chavismo can't fight against its own nature.
SNTP@sntpvenezuela

I agree with this. For chavismo, cooperation with the US is imperative for survival, it remains to be seen if the strategy will work. What also remains to be seen is the administration’s commitment to include the Venezuelan opposition in the current process.
Imdat Oner@imdat_oner

In the coming days, I expect a significant purge within the Chavista regime. Many of the most openly anti-American figures are likely to be removed from the cabinet and replaced by officials prepared to work directly with Washington. We may see a wave of new faces very soon.

Alfredo Díaz, former governor of Nueva Esparta, one of many political prisoners in Venezuela, has died in custody. Has been imprisoned for a year in solitary confinement. The Venezuelan state is responsible for those in its custody. His death is unacceptable.
Alfredo Romero@alfredoromero
