New Blog: I’ve been a literacy coach for nearly a decade, through six different job titles and several theories of change (some of them contradictory), with one persistent question: - What should a literacy coach know and be able to do? righttoreadproject.com/2026/03/09/wha…

@drheidibc We approach instruction differently when the question is framed as, "What instruction do most kids need?" rather than "What do we want Tier 1 instruction to look like?"

@drheidibc YES!!! Have you seen Katie Pace-Miles' present on how *rare* it is for schools to have student data that looks anything like a triangle (inverted or otherwise). I think she found that only 3% have data that's triangular. Most common is an hour-glass shape.

🧵What if we stopped displaying and talking about universal screening data in RTI/MTSS systems as triangles/pyramids? Would it make more visual sense to use bar graphs or something else? Would it eliminate the distracting discourse of the “upside down” triangle or the “inverted”

New Blog: "Following the reading research is more challenging than it sounds... and for classroom teachers, making sense of studies is extra challenging. So how do we make sense of a study to decide whether it’s worth our effort?" righttoreadproject.com/2025/04/01/a-c…

If you care about the science of reading, please take the time to learn about the cuts to NIH. NIH has funded much of the research on reading and it's heartbreaking to think of the work grinding to a halt... right at the time when public interest in its findings is so high.
Tiffany Hogan@tiffanyphogan

These cuts will devastate the work I & so many others do for our most vulnerable children with disabilities. On a personal note, I was saved from aggressive breast cancer bc of the work #NIH funded. This will not make America great. This will devastate us ALL to the core.

@CreditFlex I don't presume to know his goals, but I do know that research to understand reading difficulties, language disorders, and other challenges children face in school is at risk because the research strives for equitable academic outcomes and the inclusion of diverse learners.

@right2readproj 15% indirect does sound low. Do we know more about what they are trying to get to? It’s not like Elon doesn’t know that R&D is expensive. So, where are they heading?

@RealAshleyLuna In our research to practice partnership, my school has been learning from the SAiL Lab how to apply to our classrooms what's been learned about lang development + lang difficulties. And we're beginning to create an MTSS system for language (like we have in place for phonics).

@RealAshleyLuna So much of the work left to do in SoR could be considered "the last mile." There's so much to be learned by research to practice partnerships that help schools learn how to apply the findings of research (much of which has been done in highly controlled settings, like labs),
