Some say MI should be like FL and TX and preempt local gov't to solve the housing crisis. But the data shows something different👇. Perhaps preemption isn’t the answer for Michigan’s housing needs. 🤔 #MIHomeProgram #PartnershipOverPreemption

I ❤️ the haters calling us NIMBYs & ill-informed bc we proposed real workable solution something that will actually produce more homes. We don’t have to hide behind half truths & scare tactics to push policy, we’re getting recognized by national experts as a model. #MiHomeProgam

What makes a strong town? Housing solutions that uplift unique community voices; not blanket mandates from the capitol. Read more in this article published by Charles Marohn, founder and president of @StrongTowns 👇 hubs.la/Q03-4yd80 #MIHomeProgram #Housing #Strongtowns

The United States Conference of Mayors
NEW: 230 bipartisan mayors have signed a declaration to de-escalate our nation’s political tensions & recommit to unity. The agreement was first shared last month at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, the site of the deadliest domestic terrorism act in living memory.

Show up for locals too! Don’t support a budget that doesn’t hold constitutional & statutory rev sharing harmless. Taking unrestricted $$ and replacing it with restricted $$ is not apples to apples. Ask questions!
MI House Democrats@MIHouseDems

Tonight we took action to ensure Michigan keeps running for the people of our state. There’s a lot more work to be done, but House Dems won’t quit showing up for you, for families, for kids, for workers, for Michiganders. #MILeg

At 2am, we passed a 1-week spending bill to keep the State open until Oct 8, by which time we hope to have a full 2026 budget. I’m working late at night and early in the morning to stop the horrible House Republican budget and defend our schools, healthcare, cities and people!

Representative Bryan Posthumus said the holdup is unfortunate: “It wasn’t the ideal situation. Would it have been better if we’d passed it on July 1? 100%. I wish we had. That’s something that we as a government, we need to be better at.”

An example: Supporters of the “deal” are saying the School Aid Fund will be backfilled for the gas tax change. But they’re not saying how much School Aid $ will go to higher education, freeing up additional General Fund $, next year.
Craig Mauger@CraigDMauger

One thing to watch and I heard from multiple Michigan senators last night was why would lawmakers approve tax hikes to create new revenue without first seeing how the new budget “deal” proposes to spend the state’s current revenues.

On the state and federal level, there is a lot of blaming the Democrats or blaming the Republicans, but with very little specifics. I do my best not to do that and will fully refrain from doing so in every future commentary. Please give me a rebuke if you see otherwise. I will refute policies and stances with full intensity, but not a party or a person that fellow Americans support and vote for. It just is not helpful. We can only change ourselves as we can only control ourselves. Policies and stances need to be reformed, without a doubt, and that is only done by going into them with depth. It turns off the minds of many when we just blame the other side and the people that were duly elected. Minds are changed by rational argument.

The question everyone is asking... but how? How will the gov't stay open. Dem Rep Alabas Farhat says: "The Constitution gives the governor the authority to deem certain departments essential. And again, I mean, she has a plan. She has great lawyers. I would take it up with her."
Jonathan Oosting@jonathanoosting

Press release last week: We have a budget deal to avoid a government shutdown! Press release this evening: We still have a budget deal, but no actual budget bills. State government will stay open anyway.

When it comes to housing in Michigan, we need to make some bold changes. The MI Home Program would: 🏡 Result in over 10,000 homes being built or rehabbed 🏡 Invest $160 million annually for five years 🏡 Promote local zoning changes Learn more: mml.org/advocacy/mi-ho…

Interesting takes on home rule, property rights, & zoning in committee this morning. Every property has property rights so zoning is how you mitigate uses, impacts & nuisances. Owning property doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want w/ it. #mileg
