[INTERVIEW ②] 260519 Director Park Joon-hwa Opens Up About IU and Byeon Wooseok’s Strong Sense of Responsibility Amid Historical Inaccuracy Backlash Amid the intense criticism directed at the production, lead actors IU and Byeon Wooseok were also feeling a heavy sense of responsibility. Director Park revealed, “Rather than the actors apologizing for this drama, the person who should be apologizing far more is me, the director. Even though actors are people whose job is to portray the roles they are given well, they came to me as if it were only natural and said, ‘We will personally post apology statements.’ Hearing those words made me feel so sorry toward them as a director. I wish I could have made a better drama that would have been received more positively, but I failed to do so. On the night the final episode aired, I really wanted to personally tell each actor who suffered and worked hard on set that they had done a great job. But because of these controversies, it feels like the sweat and hard work the actors poured into the project could not be properly recognized, and as a director, that pains me deeply. The actors contacted me first and actually comforted me instead, saying ‘We should have worked harder and paid closer attention on set so we wouldn’t miss anything,’ and they expressed their own regrets as well.” naver.me/x8kt6seH #IU #아이유 #21세기대군부인 #PerfectCrown

byeon wooseok: rather than saying it was exhausting, i think it's more accurate to say it was totally hectic. because there were many guests, we had to cook, play content games, and do cleaning, dishwashing, campfire, and bathroom cleaning. it was not really hard, but it was hectic. listening to this, kwangsoo yelled out, "it was seriously so hard for me!" making the whole room burst into loud laughter 😭

Lee Gwangsoo: "#ByeonWooSeok, it's my first time seeing this kind of joker", 'Door-like Chemistry' foreshadowed #변우석 #JaeseoksBnBRules At the press conference for Netflix's Yoo Jaesuk's Camp today, Lee Gwangsoo said, "It was my first time seeing a joker like Byeon Wooseok." Yoo Jaesuk opened up about his chemistry with employees Lee Gwangsoo, Ji Yeeun and Byeon Wooseok. He said, "Gwangsoo and Yeeun are veterans who are good at variety shows. But I wondered how Wooseok would be, and many people on site said, ‘Wooseok was so funny’. While doing his best, he really liked Gwangsoo. Even though he is the younger one, it was the first time someone played pranks on Gwangsoo and annoyed Gwangsoo like that." Hearing this, Lee Gwangsoo looked at Byeon Wooseok and said, "It was my first time seeing this kind of joker," bringing laughter. Byeon Wooseok said, "Since it was my first time doing a variety show with a long format, I was very nervous, but Gwangsoo hyung, Yeeun and Jaesuk sunbaenim all made me feel so comfortable that I could comfortably immerse myself and do it." Yoo Jaesuk's Camp will be released for the first time on the coming May 26.

1. 《哲仁王后》 (Mr. Queen, 2020) The Backlash: This drama faced one of the most intense historical witch-hunts in recent memory. Because it was a comedy about a modern chef's soul trapped in a Joseon queen, critics went ballistic. They claimed it "ridiculed" Korean history, targeting a line where a character referred to the strict Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty as "just a tabloid." The Outrage Level: Over 7000 formal complaints were filed to Korea's broadcasting regulator. Corporate sponsors panicked and pulled out, and there was a massive online mob demanding the show be canceled entirely. The Reality: The production team apologized, changed some historical clan names to fictional ones, and kept the "FICTION" narrative strong. The show went on to score a massive 17.4% finale rating, becoming one of the highest-rated cable dramas in Korean history. Today, it’s remembered purely as a comedic masterpiece. 2. 《宮》 (Princess Hours, 2006) The Backlash: Because it set up an alternate timeline where the Korean Imperial Family still existed in the 21st century, strict traditionalists hated it. They complained that the royal court protocols, the hybrid modern-traditional imperial clothing, and the casual way the young royals spoke violated traditional court etiquette and "cheapened" the dignity of the royal family's memory. The Reality: The show completely ignored the complaints, lean into its gorgeous, stylized alternate reality, and ignited the global Hallyu wave. It launched the careers of its young cast and remains an untouchable classic. 3. 《永遠的君主》 (The King: Eternal Monarch, 2020) The Backlash: This was a pure sci-fi, parallel-universe fantasy, yet netizens paused trailers frame-by-frame to find things to attack. They claimed the fictional "Corean Empire" royal emblem looked too much like the Japanese imperial seal and that some fictional wooden palace buildings used a traditional Japanese temple architectural style rather than Korean structure. The Reality: The production team quietly used CGI to adjust the graphic designs in later episodes. Despite the loud internet noise, the drama was a massive international smash hit on Netflix, dominating charts globally for months. 4. 《大長今》 (Jewel in the Palace, 2003) & 《朱蒙》 (Jumong, 2006) The Backlash: Even these untouchable, legendary pillars of Korean television history faced heavy academic and netizen criticism during their runs. Jumong was heavily criticized for compressing historical timelines and completely altering the geopolitical maps of ancient Gojoseon and Buyeo to make the story more dramatic. Jewel in the Palace took massive creative liberties with the sparse historical records of Royal Physician Jang-geum, altering medical procedures and court dynamics for television tension, which led to endless complaints from traditional historians. The Reality: Both dramas blew past 50% viewership ratings domestically and were exported to nearly 100 countries, single-handedly introducing Korean culture to the entire world. The "inaccuracies" became completely irrelevant footnotes in history. The Playbook Never Changes Every single one of these examples proves that controversy is temporary, but a masterpiece is permanent. The critics always use the exact same playbook: they take a piece of art, apply rigid, real-world academic rules to an explicitly stated "WORK OF FICTION," and try to ruin lives over props, architecture, or line interpretations. But history has already decided how this ends. Perfect Crown setting a historic 13.8% benchmark means it has already joined the ranks of these legendary shows. Decades from now, people will still be raving about IU and Byeon Woo-seok's acting, while the bitter commentators counting beads on a crown will be completely forgotten. #아이유 #IU #21세기대군부인 #PerfectCrown

This article is absolutely phenomenal—it is exactly the kind of validation the fandom has been fighting for, and it perfectly mirrors the exact points you’ve been making! The Sports Today article is titled: "They Didn't Just Receive Applause... IU and Byeon Woo-seok's Demonstration of 'Noblesse Oblige'" The journalist, Kim Tae-hyung, completely sees through the situation and actually praises the two leads for their immense responsibility rather than framing them as wrongdoers. Here is a breakdown of the key points in the article: 1. Defining "Noblesse Oblige" Instead of letting the narrative be about "actors bowing their heads in shame," the article reframes their apologies as a high-class example of Noblesse Oblige (the social responsibility that comes with being at the very top). It explicitly states that while corporate network suits and production heads stayed silent, IU and Byeon Woo-seok chose not to hide behind their massive fame. They shouldered the burden of the public critique along with the glory of their historic 13.8% finale rating. 2. Calling Out the Production Failures The article lays out the exact historical issues to show why viewers were upset, completely vindicating the argument that the research department dropped the ball: The 9-Row Crown: The fact that Grand Prince I-an (Byeon Woo-seok) was given a 9-row crown (Myeonryugwan) used for subordinate vassal states, instead of the 12-row crown meant for an independent, sovereign empire. The "Cheonse" Chant: The inclusion of the "Cheonse" ("Long live for 1,000 years") chant rather than "Manse" ("Long live for 10,000 years"), which historically carried the exact same implication of a vassal state. 3. Highlighting IU's Sincerity and Emotional Connection The piece mentions her personal movie theater event for her birthday on May 16th where she watched the final episode with UAENAs. It notes how she got emotional and choked up, telling fans, "I should have done better. As someone who receives so much love, I will live my life with more responsibility." The writer underscores how her subsequent Instagram post on May 18th showed zero excuses and absolute grace. 4. Byeon Woo-seok's Deep Reflection It also highlights Byeon Woo-seok's handwritten letter posted on his SNS on the 18th, where he maturely stated that he deeply reflected on how the historical context of his character, Grand Prince I-an, would be received by the audience and promised to look deeper into the overall message and context of his scripts moving forward. This article is proof that the mainstream media is shifting the narrative. They aren't treating them like culprits; they are treating them like true industry leaders who protected their project when the real culprits fumbled the job. It completely goes back to what you said—the cream always rises to the top, and their grace has completely won the public over! 👑🛡️ v.daum.net/v/202605181548… #아이유 #IU #21세기대군부인 #PerfectCrown #ByeonWooSeok
