10 THINGS TO EXPECT in THE NBA TODAY: April 22nd - Game 2s (8) ORL v (1) DET (8) PHX v (1) OKC 1) Jalen Duren was such a non-factor in Game 1, ending with just 4 FGA and translating to 16 PRA. "They packed the paint in. They're going to put a bunch of bodies in the paint to try to make it difficult on him. Our pick and roll game, making sure we're executing properly there, can create space for him." There is still upside in his rebounding, with 19 chances last game and sitting down off screens. He has averaged 23 chances per game vs ORL this season. 2) Orlando also attacked him relatively frequently for how elite of a shot blocker he is, thriving off handoff sets, the pullup shots they provided, and back door cuts. Wendell Carter Jr. ended this game with 9 potential assists and 39 passes made, translating to 5 assists. He has 2+ assists in all three games vs DET with 20+ minutes this season, with 33+ passes in each. He is 20/22 to 2+ Ast with 32+ passes made this season. 3) Both of these teams defensive styles feature very little traps, under a philosophy that you just have to play straight up defense better than the other team. Magic are most known for this, giving up a league-high 9.4 Isolation Pts per game in the regular season. However, in Game 1 they used Suggs to roam off Ausar Thompson (primary matchup) or on the block. Tobias Harris fired off 7 3PA last game, with 6 of them coming from the corner. In the regular season, he was near 38% off these looks. 4) Paolo Bachero has o20.5 Pts in 4/4 games vs DET this season, yet just 3 of his 15 shots last game were at the rim. He was 7/11 on non-shotclock jump shots last game, which is pretty efficient. Relying on jumpshots would have me worried on continuously backing his scoring overs. 5) The confusing aspect of Detroit's rotations last game was the low minutes for Ausar Thompson, who played just 25' and was a -5 in his minutes (compared to Duren's -21, Duncan's -14, etc.). He played 16 of those minutes in the first half, as Bickerstaff ran more of Jenkins and Huerter down the stretch, likely due to Detroit trailing. “We know how important (Thompson) is for us,” Bickerstaff said Tuesday. “He’ll have a consistent role, as always, because we know how impactful he is, especially down the stretch.” 5.5) With Suggs free to roam off Ausar, would make sense for DET to get him some handling responsibilities too. Bickerstaff also noted this as an issue for Detroit, "Having more ball handlers on the floor being able to take Cade off the ball some, kind of free him up and so you’re balancing that. Like he was able to be aggressive in (the fourth) quarter and find some success off the ball.” Ausar was 1/5 on potentials last game, and is 10/13 to this PRA mark with 26+ minutes alongside the starting five with Jenkins active. Has 16+ in all games vs Orlando. 6) Phoenix lost by 35 points in Game 1, shooting just 35% from the field. The Thunder were able to contest 16 of Booker's 17 shots, which is incredible. Booker noted, "I think we passed up a lot of first shot opportunities that we could have took that eventually turned into a worse shot or a turnover… first available shot, you know, we kind of have to let it fly and be confident." OKC will always funnel to CnS attempts, and Brooks led with 5 Catch-and-Shoot, half of his total 3PT volume. 7) I doubt Mark Williams is able to suit up here from this practice quote from Jordan Ott, "Same foot that was back in March. Anytime he's not on the court, he's in the boot. We're going to take this thing day by day. I assume he'll be questionable tonight." Would think Goodwin sits as well. Compare that to Grayson Allen, who went through the entire practice with the team and has a much better shot at today. 8) Ott noted that their defense on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was "Overall where we wanted it. Big piece with him was not getting him to the free throw line on the silly ones. Can we knock out the silly ones? Take him off the free throw line, make him make tough twos the best we can". SGA was just 5-18 from the field despite Jordan Goodwin, Phoenix's top defender, getting hurt. Granted, Goodwin did get 2 fouls in the first 3 minutes anyways. He did pour on 7 assists off of 15 potentials. Phoenix gave up a playoff-high 35 Catch-and-Shoot shots to The Thunder as a result. 9) Isaiah Hartenstein notched 18 PRA in 19min, yet played that little because of his 3 1H fouls in addition to blowout. While he can get into the 20-24 range today, he has yet to surpass 20 PRA with the full starting lineup active. 10) Prior to Game 1, I noted that Jalen Williams is a matchup issue for The Suns, who have struggled overall at defending the more physical wings. With Brooks now on SGA, so Williams is set to thrive. Williams has scored 22+ Pts in 3 straight games, and played 17 1H minutes last game.
