In 1986, the American Medical Association published an article titled "The Physical Death of Jesus Christ". It details the entire process of Jesus' trial to His death on the cross. In Luke 22, before Jesus is arrested, it is written that He was in great distress & sweating blood. Although rare, it is recognized as Hematidrosis, a condition caused by high levels of stress. At the time, the crucifixion was considered the worst death for the worst of criminals. But this is not all Jesus faced. He endured whipping so severe that it tore the flesh from His body. He was beaten so horribly that His face was torn & His beard ripped. A crown of thorns, 2-3 inches long cut deeply into His scalp. The leather whip used to flog Him had tiny iron balls & sharp bones. The balls caused internal injuries while the sharp bones ripped open His flesh. His skeletal muscles, veins, & bowels are exposed, causing major blood loss. Most men do not survive this kind of torture. After Jesus was severely flogged, He was forced to carry His cross while people mocked & spat on Him. Crucifixion was a process meant to instill excruciating pain, creating a slow & agonizing death. Nails as long as 8 inches were driven into Jesus' wrists & feet. The Roman soldiers knew the tendons in the wrists would tear & break, forcing Jesus to use His back muscles to support Himself to breathe. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the courage...Jesus endured this reality for 3 hours! The Gospel of John writes that after Jesus' death, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear & blood & water came out. Scientists explain that from hypovolemic shock, the rapid heart rate causes fluid to gather in the sack around the lungs & heart. The accumulation of fluid in the membrane around the heart is called a Pericardial effusion & the lungs is called a pleural effusion. To the world, Christianity is as foolish as it can get. They believe it's for the weak. But when you are confronted by the reality of the cross, it's clearly not a pretty sight. It is brutal & horrific. This is the weight Jesus carried. The weight of the sins of the world, all so that we can live. God's wrath is fully satisfied in Jesus. This is what it took. Repent & believe! Jesus is “God among us” in the flesh. Jesus is our Savior. Jesus loves you so much that He went through this spiritual and physical punishment for your sins and mine. Jesus is the LORD, Almighty God, Everlasting Father. Thank You, Jesus.

Hello @DSGovernment, We commend the reported arrest of suspects in the Ozoro incident. We now urge thorough investigations, more arrests, prompt prosecution, and regular updates until justice prevails. Importantly, preventive measures must be strengthened to avert a repeat.

This lady reached out to us in distress upon learning that her elderly mother had been taken into custody because their dog, kept unlatched inside their own fenced compound, had bitten a neighbour who trespassed through their property. This neighbour was well-known for using their home as an unauthorized shortcut, despite multiple warnings to stop. From what we gathered, even though he was in the wrong, the family still attempted to offer immediate medical assistance, which he declined. Months passed until recently when the neighbour suddenly revived the issue, involved the police, and had the elderly woman arrested and held for hours, claiming the family hadn’t reimbursed his alleged medical expenses. On reaching out, our legal team ensured the immediate release of the elderly woman. This incident brings to the fore the alarming degree to which the Nigeria Police can be weaponized to harass innocent citizens in the service of private grudges. The Nigerian law is clear: the police have no legal authority to arrest or detain anyone over a civil dispute. A dog bite that occurs on private property, especially when the “victim” is trespassing, is a civil matter, not a criminal one. In this case, the neighbour had no lawful grounds for his complaint. Nonetheless, we advised the family to vaccinate the dog and install a visible “Beware of Dog” sign as an added precaution. Facing injustice and need free legal support? Please call our helplines: 0903 116 7894, 0810 284 2542, 08139360774 or shoot us a DM. May justice always prevail.

Earlier this week, our GBV Response Team @gbami_by_gavel intervened in a blackmail [revenge porn] case, securing the arrest of a vengeful ex and his cohort in Lagos. Frame 1 shows when she reached out. What’s the back story? Our client had been involved with a man until she discovered he was married, so she ended it immediately. However, this man had non-consensually recorded her private moment, and has since used it to blackmail her, making demands, sending someone to threaten her physically, and vowing to ruin her unless she gave in. Ex or not, it remains a firm stance @gbami_by_gavel that digital blackmail or threat to life must be met with equal legal force. Too many victims of gender-based violence have lost their lives giving in or trivializing threats, forgetting that abusers and murderers walk among us. Not anymore! We are particularly proud to have intervened in this matter because our client helped us understand this wasn’t just a victory for her pride but for her life as she had begun contemplating the worst. Gratitude to her colleagues for the timely referral to Gbami, and to the police for their cooperation. Are you being blackmailed or sextorted? Do you suspect someone close to you is? Please reach out to our GBV response team @gbami_by_gavel via DM or call 0810-284-2542. This is a safe space 🧡

Every day in Nigeria, people are arrested; some lawfully, others without charges, bail, or legal representation. On this, the law is clear: No one should be detained beyond the statutory period without proper charge or administrative bail. But as with many laws, the impact lies in their active and consistent enforcement. It is with this commitment that we, alongside four magistrates of the Oyo State Judiciary: Her Worship O.O. Ogunkanmi, His Worship I.O. Olanipekun, Magistrate Adelabu, and Chief Magistrate Daodu joined the Justice and Peace Development Commission, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, the Nigerian Bar Association, and other civil society actors on routine inspection visits to 11 police stations across Oyo State. These included Apete, Sango, Mokola, Moniya, Ojoo, Bodija, Idi-Ape, Gbagi, Kajorepo, Eleyele, and Magara Divisions. During these visits, the team noted encouraging improvements in the physical and sanitary conditions of some stations, particularly at the Sango and Apete Divisional Headquarters. While the majority of detainees were found to be within the legal detention window, the magistrates expressed concern about delays in either charging suspects to court or granting administrative bail. In response, immediate steps were taken to initiate or expedite bail processes where applicable. A total of 104 detainees were interviewed, many of whom were laudably at various stages of investigation or awaiting resolution through settlement processes. Four detainees were released on the spot due to the absence of formal charges or insufficient evidence to justify continued detention. We also noted cases with legal or procedural red flags for follow-up and extended legal support. These visits also served as a platform to reiterate our long-standing offer to support the digitisation of court proceedings within the Oyo State Judiciary, an initiative still awaiting formal engagement from the relevant authorities. We will continue to advocate for full compliance with Section 34 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) in Oyo State and Nigeria at large, ensuring that justice is not only done, but done fairly, promptly, and in accordance with the rule of law. #AccessToJustice #PoliceOversight #OyoState #Nigeria

🟠#OGBVThrowback to the case of late singer Osinachi, whose death from #domesticviolence led to her husband's death sentence for culpable homicide. While some see the sentence as justice served, others view it as extreme, especially for the to-be orphaned children. Is it? 🧵1/4
