@jasonc_nc Many want food and beverage options, but the city’s solution is to build brick and mortar restaurants in the parks. It may work out, we’ll see.

@riverparksnow I would argue not doing so is a disservice to the public. Why would you deny valuable services within a public space? And that’s before the fiscal reasons.

Many city parks depts view “commerce” in parks negatively. No one can adequately explain why, but it’s reality. It’s also self-defeating as it creates a revenue source & drives higher usage. Unfortunately many parks dept heads measure success by acres owned, not visitors per acre. More cities need to adopt the kiosk strategy of Lisbon and elsewhere.

American city parks have a SERIOUS deficiency of vendors selling tasty treats, so it's cool to see a new place popping up in Central Park to grab a pastry and a coffee.

@jasonc_nc We love these small and attractive kiosks in parks and have tried to convince our city officials to do these instead of planning expensive brick and mortar restaurants that are higher risk, on our riverfront parks. Still holding out someone will see this and agree!

@nanjpowell It’s why we keep saying shade trees for the riverfront! If you want people to linger and enjoy the spaces, it’s 10-20 degrees cooler under a tree, especially when there is also grass. Here is the riverwalk this morning at Friendhip Fountain. Notice: no people!

“Palm trees provide shade” is one thing you hear from people who don’t object to the continued overuse of palm trees in NE FL. It’s 95 degrees in this parking lot today.

Also, a cafe/restaurant proposed for the "future development" area just west of the fountain is uncertain due to recent City Council discussions.
