meanwhile, we're doing serious reading of several epics this term at @MarquetteU.
students from all sorts of majors too.

Harvard faculty report that they've had to "trim some readings and drop others entirely, switch from novels to short stories, and that it’s difficult to keep assigning reading in the face of increasing student complaints."

I have just: 1) signed a contract for a new book of #poetry & translations; & 2) sent my private editor the last chunk of the #Propertius translation.
I'll pace myself for a bit since: 1) we have grandchildren for #Easter; 2) we drive back to MA on Monday; & 3) #Petrarch launch is Tuesday.

@nivenrile really covering the bases here, samuel. 😄
best of luck with it. i've been a loose-leaf tea drinker since my teens, but got hooked on the coffee bean in grad school. yet to kick it, but i've tried several times. oy.
English

Day two with tea instead of coffee. Wish me luck.
And before you feel tempted to speak ill of coffee, it’s still a part of me. I’m just doing a dairy-free test and I don’t drink coffee black.
And before you feel tempted to make fun of me for not drinking my coffee black, I like to enjoy my life and will not resort to your self-flagellating ways.

@Tyler_A_Harper @jbillinson said it before and i'll say it again: if "speciesist" means being biased toward human beings over software programs, then i am firmly and unapologetically speciesist.
English

@jbillinson I completely unironically believe that social justice rhetoric is going to be deployed to normalize AI sex bots, relationships, friendships, etc. We are already seeing it in bits and pieces. It may fail but Tech World is going to try to make anti-AI bias a taboo kind of bigotry.
English

@AndyMasley fair enough, but there are still plenty of us who simply have no desire to continue entrenching our lives with more and more digital infrastructure and reject the projects of these companies.
that is, and i see that this isn't what you're saying, it's not all about functionality.
English

@DaultRadio as usual, i don't say this lightly, but f*%k this whole discourse from insulated misanthropes in power.
English

Lies, damn lies, and large language model hallucinations.

🚨 Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei: “We are so close to these models reaching the level of human intelligence, and yet there doesn't seem to be a wider recognition in society of what's about to happen … There hasn't been a public awareness of the risks.”
English

@nivenrile wow, looked it up; wild.
thankfully, skunk cabbage doesn't actually smell unless you break the leaves open. even then, it's really not that bad! :)
English

@riyeff I have never heard of this before, though I did grow up with a dead horse plant in the side yard. Every few years 'twas a confusing and reeking time when it bloomed.
English

@jennfrey to reject something as undesirable is not necessarily to be afraid of it. this isn't even a strawman fallacy, it's just inaccurate.
English

@jennfrey careful here, though. bernie is accepting the doomer script hook, line, and sinker: 'ai' is going to take all the jobs and destroy humanity, so we've got to act etc. the premise still portrays these companies and their products as promethean prodigies.
