If you just say "pick up the ball" that's not developing anything. Talent is talent. But even great artists started with fundamentals...

@Brian_Kelly19 @Swanson8686 Be careful with research as it has the ability to twist to manipulate results. I have coached lacrosse since 2003 and have worked with athletes who have been neglected fundamentals which left athletes at a disadvantage. A wholistic approach of fun skill dev and play is key.

How many times do youth lacrosse players get told they can’t pass/shoot/pick up a GB etc…a certain way, but then that same skill is applauded when it happens at the college/pro levels? Why do we have this double standard? Why do we stifle higher order thinking & creativity in young players by insisting on learning certain ‘fundamentals’ first? You don’t actually have to teach rigid techniques (that often don’t even work in many game situations) before allowing players to explore other ways of solving movement problems. Evidence-based information is available to any coach who is curious enough to look for it…..
