@DGlaucomflecken Everything here, including comments, is very valid. As an oncology genetic counselor, several times each day, I tell people that “aging is one of the biggest risk factor for cancers,” not genetics. I have received little pushback from elderly patients.

Maybe it’s because of my cardiac arrest, but I don’t understand why patients get upset when I say their symptoms are due to aging. 95% of what I diagnose is because we get old. I always bring it up as delicately as possible, but like do you know how lucky you are? I see patients in their 80s and think, “man I hope I get there one day.” So many things in this world can kill you. You’ve beaten the odds. Honestly, congratulations, you’re old.

We live in a highly patriarchal society. I hv done around 200 kidney transplants. My findings in my series: 1. Around 80-90 % of Kidney Transplant Recipients are men. When a woman develops ESRD( Kidney Failure), it is very hard to find a Kidney donor, among the relatives. 2. In my entire career, not even a single husband came forward to donate his Kidney to his sick wife, & save her life. 3. When a woman is a Kidney recipient, the person who donates is usually a sister or daughter, or mother. 4. Most women r ready to offer their kidneys to their ailing husbands to save his life. The converse never happens. 5. There was once an extreme case, when a 19 yr old legal wife, donated her Kidney to her 45 yr old husband. After the Tx, I was casually talking to her. Her story was bizarre. This was her elder sister's husband. Just for Tx, the entire family had planned it carefully. The husband divorced his wife, & the 19 yr old girl was beaten fr days to marry the 45 yr old man, since her Kidney was a perfect match. So, a simple survey of Kidney Tx recipients & donors exposes how deeply patriarchal, misogynistic, our rotten society is. Scratch the veneer of democracy, modernity in India, & u find that underneath, we are still a feudal, casteist, misogynistic, patriarchal community.

The incredibly talented team @MorePerfect lost our jobs today. I’m feeling so grateful for the time we spent telling vital, heartbreaking, damn good stories about the high court. And now, we plot the next move 👀

Reading a 📖 that is making me question over and over: are the artist n the art, one n the same? Or are they two entities, where one can be revered, while the other, despised. And if so, we will have to qns everything created on them, including the very foundations of societies.

We live in an era where being a librarian is a risky job, to life, limb, and liberty. What a joke. And the threat comes from the very community one belongs to. The annual #BannedBooksWeek celebrates the freedom to read one.npr.org/i/1204098241:1…

I’ve been a hospital chaplain now for eight years at hundreds of deathbeds. I want to tell you something I’ve witnessed. Most people, at the end, realize they’ve spent a lot of their life hiding. Sometimes by choice, or because they could not safely choose to be themselves. ➡️

When analyzing UK Biobank questionnaire responses, you might have noticed that some participants answered "I don't know" and some, "I prefer not to answer". And most likely you'd have excluded those individuals and moved on with your project. But Andrea and his colleagues didn't. They instead saw a potential opportunity to explore the genetics of a fascinating human behaviour:'non-response'. The authors wondered why would someone prefer to answer "I don't know" or "I prefer not to answer". Perhaps they didn't understand the question? Or they were not comfortable revealing that information? Or they were just tired and just wanted to get it done by going with the easiest choice? Or they were in a playful mood on that particular data and so, decided to mess up the data? Or perhaps they genuinely didn't know, as the question is about something that happened a long time ago. A simple guess would be that it could be any of those things and something else completely random. If so, we wouldn't expect a systematic difference in the phenotypes and genotypes between "non-responders" vs responders. But the authors show otherwise. The authors show that nonresponse behaviour is significantly associated with cognitive, socioeconomic and mental health phenotypes--both phenotypically and genetically. And nonresponse behaviour itself is heritable and genetic variants associated with nonresponse behaviour likely influence cognitive processes in the brain. And a polygenic score based on this GWAS can predict in an independent sample if someone will be inclined to choose "I don't know" or "Prefer not to answer". In addition to showing that there is a complex fascinating genetics behind this human behaviour, the authors also highlight how excluding nonresponding participants from your GWAS can bias your interpretation of certain genetic analyses. And a step further, the authors also show there are ways to correct this bias, at least to some extent. As always, creative work from Andrea and his team. A must-read for anyone who works with UK Biobank questionnaire phenotypes. - Mignogna, Carey & Wedow et al. @NatureHumBehav

The day I registered for graduate school, I told the clinical director that the loan amount made me nervous. He said, and I quote, "Don't worry about it. After you graduate, it will be manageable." Since he already had his doctorate, I believed him. 1/3
