This looks like unsportsmanlike conduct to me. At the very least, it raises serious questions about fair play. I’ve played many events while being sick and never forfeited like this. There should be clear rules and consequences unless properly justified.

It is very sad to see people missing their norm opportunities because of forfeits, and it is unfortunately common in big open events. I can count 16 forfeits in the last round of @ChessMenorca. Is there something that can be done for these situations @EmilSutovsky?

@Eljanov ¿Tenis o golf? Las retiradas también afectan a los premios allí. Nadie tiene derecho a exigir que otro compita para una norma. Una norma es una oportunidad condicionada por el torneo real que se juega, no un derecho subjetivo a que todos los emparejamientos previstos se disputen

@roadto2500 your logic is flawed for every single point of view. First of all, the guy had a chance to fulfill GM/IM norms but was unable to compete for because of forfeits. Also interfering prize distribution etc. And I'm unaware about similar cases in different sports.

Dear chess players, Can we please stop doing this? Not appearing at the games you are paired for is rude and unsportsmanlike, even when it doesn't fuck up somebody's chances for a GM norm.

@EmilSutovsky @ChessMenorca Yes, that makes sense. I think the burden of proof should be on the person forfeiting to provide a very valid reason. It will discourage most of these cases.

@Dixit__Nikhil your reasoning is incredibly flawed, and saying that India is safer than Spain is incredibly stupid.

Completed Spain tour without losing anything? You are in the top 5-10%. The thief took my and my friend's bag which had a laptop, euros and everything. We lost 3.5 lakhs in total value. Not an isolated incident. I atleast know 10-12 stories of my friends. I am 💯 sure that India is more safe and gives you rich experience if you spend the same amount of budget.

Just came back from Spain after a week of travel. I knew just one word in Spanish - hola! Yet no one, literally no one behave badly. Took local taxis, uber, train, ate at local restaurants, cafe. Had nice and fun talks where they know 0 english and I know 0 Spanish. I hope people around the world stop pushing people to speak their language ❤️

On December 22nd my next @chessable course "The Next-Level Caro Kann" will be released. Once per week I will post a thread introducing the previous "Levels" of the most fashionable lines, which will be analyzed in the course. Which ones do you think those will be?

Learning to overcome certain technical shortcomings in chess is easier to achieve and to fulfil an immediate requirement. For example, learning an opening for the upcoming important tournament. But learning to overcome shortcomings in our nature, which require much more mental effort, requires a true passion for the game and a higher level of commitment to our long-term ambitions. It is necessary for every player to occasionally ask themselves whether their current work ethic is taking them nearer to their aim or not. How long will it take to achieve one's aim at the current rate of effort and progress? That should guide the player to make the changes required. Without periodic introspection, we will be working aimlessly and as a matter of routine. We will soon get into our comfort zone and will not dare come out of it, which will get us stuck.

It appears some players still can find new and interesting ideas in old lines! By the way, White play is amazing in this game.
