This whole standoff is dangerous for America, and Anthropic is dead wrong.
The U.S. military isn't some random customer — it's the armed forces of the country that funds and protects the entire tech ecosystem. If Claude is truly the best model for classified work (and the Pentagon says it is), then tying their hands with private-company "red lines" on lawful uses is insane. "No mass surveillance" and "no autonomous weapons" sound principled until you realize China is sprinting full-speed in the opposite direction with **zero** guardrails, zero ethics theater, and zero hesitation.
Do you think the PLA (official name of China's military) cares about Constitutional AI or human-in-the-loop for targeting? Of course not. They're building autonomous swarms, mass surveillance at planetary scale, and whatever else gives them an edge. Every day we handicap ourselves in the name of Silicon Valley morality is a day they pull ahead. This isn't abstract philosophy — it's a real military disadvantage in a new arms race.
Anthropic has every legal right to walk away from the $200M contract. Great, do it. But let's not pretend this is heroic safety leadership. It's partly genuine belief, mostly brilliant marketing that will print money from risk-averse enterprises while the Pentagon (and ultimately the country) pays the strategic price.
The real fix is Congress doing its job with actual legislation on military AI. But in the meantime, the Pentagon should terminate cleanly, switch to willing labs, and stop letting one startup play co-general. National security isn't optional, and it can't be vetoed by Dario Amodei's conscience.
America doesn't win wars by being the most ethical on paper. We win by being the strongest. This episode risks making us weaker.

Well, it finally happened. The mainline dropped below 10% of the sample in 2022. In the 1950s, historians have said that mainliners were more than 50% of the population. They were 31% of America in 1976. 19% in 1988. 14% in 2004. 10% in 2016. And now, 9%.

@robbiejoebrown That would also be, of course, an interesting thing to do, bc the English we have is of the English lectures he actually gave! So it makes sense that no one would try to re-translate. (On the other hand, my late night thoughts on kuyper may make less sense!)
