those were the days! for many intellectuals & literary persons, most of their/our basic reading was in our late teens & early twenties. I remember devouring (!) "Buddenbrooks," "Magic Mountain" & "Dr. Faustus" in one heady month having been captivated by "Death in Venice" & Mann's short fiction... often I recommend my senior thesis students at Princeton to read "Buddenbrooks"--the very best "first novel" ever written by a young writer near their age.

I read each of those books as an undergraduate, except Madame Bovary. But I also read Ulysses, Women in Love, V, and several novels written by you. I look back on those years as a time of profound luxury, when I had nothing more pressing to do than sit in some big easy chair in the Mugar Library and read.

What’s obvious is that a world has come to an end and a new world is emerging. The takeaway, according to an Iranian friend here in Tehran, not only for Iran but all sovereign states, there’s no deterrence without a nuclear weapon. Regardless of the result of Trump’s attack on Iran, this will not bring peace to anyone.
