Understanding drugs: Statins (cholesterol-lowering) 💊 (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin) ➡️ What they do Block HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. ➡️ Why doctors use them They think: Lower LDL → lower cardiovascular risk (in some people). ➡️ The problem LDL is NOT the root cause of plaque formation and cardiovascular diseases. It's the inflammation and glycation (sugar conjugated with proteins and lipids) that initiate it. They don’t just block cholesterol. They suppress the mevalonate pathway, which also makes: • CoQ10 → mitochondrial energy • Dolichols → cell membrane structure • Prenylated proteins → cell signaling Chronic suppression: • Muscle pain + weakness • Fatigue • Lower exercise tolerance • Cognitive effects in some people ➡️ What should we treat instead • Insulin resistance • Chronic inflammation • High-carb processed diets • Poor sleep • Sedentary lifestyle ➡️ Remember Statins were designed for people with some types of familial hypercholesterolemia only. Unfortunately, Big Pharma quickly realized they need more customers. ⚡ Bottom line: Statins treat the number, not the cause. LDL is often a response to metabolic dysfunction - not the villain. Lowering LDL won't fix any problems - lifestyle can.
