Most of us could agree that kicking puppies is bad. Imagine that the government proposed legislation called the "Stop kicking puppies" bill. This would stop the kicking of puppies by installing a camera in every room of the homes of people who own a puppy (or might own a puppy), allowing the RSPCA to monitor potential puppy-kicking incidents. Many people would still support this, on the basis that kicking puppies is bad.

You’ve fallen for the trick perfected by Blair, that has been used regularly ever since: Claim that the purpose of a piece of legislation is to fix a problem on which everyone broadly agrees, while its actual purpose (or at least its second order consequences) are deeply contentious. You will then get people who are prepared to defend the faulty legislation to the hilt, regardless of whether it will achieve its purported purpose or how negative the other effects might be.

Banning social media for kids is necessary to change the culture around it. Like how we banned smoking in restaurants. It changed our views and habits on smoking. Culture is everything. It is how we save our kids.

It’s more than an issue. It’s necessarily the complete removal of any kind of privacy for anybody of any age on the internet, or on any of their devices. Given how openly oppressive the state now is, this should not be waved through on the basis that it might save some children from potential corruption.

This is clearly an issue. 👇 But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t ban social media for under 16s.
Claire Fox@Fox_Claire

My brief take on @GBNEWS re Labour's 2-tier social media ban for u 16s. Somehow Starmer forgot to ban Bluesky. They're such numpties: so keen to contol how plebs communicate, they forget to control their own comms & make their biases blatantly obvious. wa.me/447976628584?s…

@Emma_A_Webb I don't know that this should come as a surprise, particularly. It's been clear for some time that the state's primary concern is keeping a lid on the social tensions that policy has created. I would have been more surprised to learn they weren't doing this.

@jowilliams293 Badenoch could argue any of those things, but some people will legitimately counter, "You came up with this first."

Disappointing from Kemi Badenoch. Arguing "we came up with this first" on illiberal social media bans that will impact everyone is really not the gotcha Conservatives think it is. Argue for parents' rights, argue against censorship, argue against infantilising 17- year-olds. Challenge the panic and hysteria. Don't back up Starmer’s authoritarianism.

@moveincircles It's a horrifying thought. Until you remember that Milliband already gets everything he wants for the net zero agenda anyway, and it would be hard work to be much worse than Reeves.

now and then I look at Andy Burnham and think oh whatever, it can't possibly get any worse only then to remember that if he does depose Keith he'll probably make Ed Miliband Chancellor of the Exchequer

@WillKingston That's the exact same question that came into my head when I first saw the clip. Whatever the intended psychological nudge behind the outfit choice, my reaction was, "You're the Prime Minister. Wear a tie."

The media thinks another smear campaign will destroy him. Instead, they’re making @angloid0 famous. Every attack brings more attention. Every lie creates more curiosity. Every headline recruits new supporters. By the end of the week, millions of British people will know who he is and why he fights. Support him here: buymeacoffee.com/angloid Turn their smear into fuel.

It's back. Incredible how giving the state powers to assist people to die, is a now considered a higher priority for some politicians than fixing an NHS that struggles to keep people alive. Grrr.
Paul Brand@PaulBrandITV

NEW: The Assisted Dying Bill is returning to Parliament this week. Labour MP Lauren Edwards will reintroduce it on Wednesday after coming 2nd in the private members’ ballot. “The process has been frustrated by a small minority”, she argues.

@Miss_Snuffy We should lead. Which means that we shouldn't have the government make our decisions for us on behalf of our children, especially when those decisions have deeply sinister second-order consequences for other adults.

Yes kids get angry when they don’t get what they want. That doesn’t mean we should give them what they want. Banning social media for under 16s is the one thing this government has got right! We are adults. We should lead.
Dan 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿@Kingbingo_

I never talk politics with my kids, they don't know my views. But I just mentioned to my 8yo and 11yo that the Labour government is going to ban them from YouTube and they are now in a cold rage calling for the destruction of Labour party for all time.
