Trump is not threatening NATO/Europe because it’s not coming to the rescue in Hormuz. he’s been doing so consistently (Ukraine, Greenland) because it’s what he believes. Trump is predictable on Europe. The problem is the European lack of consistency in acknowledging US betrayal

For the first time in modern history, our allies are saying they won’t stand with us. That doesn’t happen by accident it’s the result of reckless leadership and burned alliances. Trump didn’t put America First, he put America alone and damaged our global reputation.

I am trying to write about Gamification in the language of (the) war by the Trump-Verse. Any suggestions and references , examples, gratefully received . Superb long read in Grauniad by Slobodian and Tarnoff on Muskism, ahead of their book Muskism due next week (24th)

Radio 4 this morning : Misha Glenny on Dada -- terrific in all respects, followed by Armando and Marina Hyde Strong Message Here on Trump speak etc -- two oddly complementary programmes. A MUST LISTEN (especially to fellow adherents of Truth Antisocial !)

I fear sen Graham has lost the plot . You don’t go to war on a false prospectus. I suspect this is the US Suez moment. The US has created the Hormuz crisis, hasn’t a clue how to resolve it. - expects others to clear it up.
Lindsey Graham@LindseyGrahamSC

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

Cheap shot all three are vg at their jobs. Starmer judgment is another thing. Why so little preparation for the cluster-f we are now in? So little to keep the Gulf open. I suppose he and the Lawfare mob aim at more firesales, Chagos, Gib, Malvinas, akrotiri ?
Richard@RedWallPleb

@Peston So how on earth is Starmer still PM, Peston? Tell me that. Because if ANY other PM was this bad, you'd have been telling everyone they had to go. What's in it for you? What are Labour giving you to not go after him? You, Rigby and Crerar are all just government mouthpieces.

I wondered who was taking whom for a fool ? I have been a journo for 58 years . The dismissive smile was oddly sneering and weird . Rather symptomatic of the government’s posture on resilience, defence and security as a hole. Lots of blather and bluster, slow and minimal delivery.

Anecdote : last summer during a visit to Aldermaston (sic) I asked John Healey about measures against mining and closure of Hormuz Straits? The 12 Day op on Iran was in the air. ‘Whatever gives you that idea? ‘ the minister replied.

@robfox45 Starmer, like Sunak, is uninterested in defence. Nothing will change while he and his ilk are in office.

I am not talking armoured industrial war, ruotanks across the Rhine etc. It requires a different mindset- which isn’t what Whitehall does. The Lawfare- warfare- welfare bit obsesses the Starmer- Hermer gang and accounts for the policy inertia on security. The country runs out of gas, accounts are hacked, the NHS goes unreformed.

On the issue of public discussion of matters of security, resilience, strategy etc the nabobs and mandarins have been reluctant to level with the public the parlous state we are in from continuous cyber attack and real threats to vital infrastructure- just for a start

I think the remaining type 23s are deteriorating faster than expected even under MoD revised plans. HMS Portland looks next to go. I don’t think there is recognition of general antipathy to defence across Westminster- Whitehall…

@afneil "the Royal Navy has ships all over the place" EXCEPT none in the Mediterranean. The last Royal Navy deployment to the Mediterranean was from April to November 2025. x.com/i/grok/share/6… Is Grok wrong? cc @afneil @DrChrisParry
