@IGMansfield This was very much my experience in 4 years on my local upper tier authority. No wonder turnout is so low. I'm still on the district council where we still have (some) discretionary spending choices!

Local elections should mean something.
And without the ability to vote for lower taxes, as well as higher taxes, they don't.

There is understandable Schadenfreude at the Reform councils' failure to cut council tax.
But it highlights a problem with local democracy which we should all be concerned about.
You can't have meaningful local democracy when 75% of budgets are spent on statutory duties.

@BNHWalker The campaign started a few days ago - Greens, like anyone, will have done their best areas first. Canvassing is more likely to yield positive results for the party doing it. If this is really what's coming back, 4/10 people the Greens talk to saying they'll vote Reform then - 💀

The Green Party have shared doorstep data with me from across Gorton and Denton. They say it shows: Reform - 39% Greens - 34% Labour - 21% Their data shows Reform 5 points ahead and Labour in a poor third place.
