In fairness, most MPs don’t have a second job. The hate of @Keir_Starmer started on the right, far right and left. It was amplified by social media. It became a news agenda and was amplified in polling. It became a primary news agenda and created panic in the PLP, which led to @AndyBurnhamGM seeing an opportunity.

If Burnham becomes PM, he has a hard road ahead with our allies. Because they trust Keir Starmer, who has restored their faith in us as reliable and dependable. They'll be diplomatic, they have to be, they'll smile on the surface. But they will know what Burnham did.

If Andy Burnham wishes to move the job to Manchester, then he should bear the full cost of doing so, rather than expecting the taxpayers to foot the bill. The job is based in London, and if he does not wish to work there, then he should stand down. The Prime Minister's place of work is Westminster, and the official residence is Number 10 Downing Street. It is not a role that can simply be relocated to protect a political legacy in Manchester. What is far more perplexing is why sections of the Labour Party, together with parts of the mainstream media, particularly the Financial Times, appear so eager to promote this narrative. If Reform sweeps to power in the Greater Manchester mayoral election, Labour will have only itself to blame. The political consequences of Andy Burnham's departure should be obvious to everyone.
