🎙️ New Podcast & YouTube: Building OlmoEarth: AI2’s Open Foundation Model for Satellite Imagery With Joseph Redmon In this episode I sat down with Joe Redmond from the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) to discuss OlmoEarth, AI2's open geospatial foundation model for Earth observation. Joe explains how the project emerged from AI2's environmental and climate initiatives, where partners needed practical tools for analysing satellite imagery across applications such as agriculture, wildfire risk, ecosystem mapping, and conservation. We discuss the unique challenges of remote sensing data, including its temporal and multispectral nature, why geospatial machine learning differs from traditional computer vision, and AI2's philosophy of building open models and tools that can be adapted to real-world environmental problems.

"Embeddings only get you so far… if you want the next level in performance, I think fine-tuning is the way to go." Ai2 research scientist @pjreddie explains how our partners customize OlmoEarth – our open-source Earth-observation models – to map crops, wildfire risk, & more. 👇

@AaronBastani Seeing it in our area - family homes becoming HMOS. Gardens bricked over, trees torn down, people living in the gardens even. So depressing

Gentrification discourse feels a decade out of date. In large parts of the country the opposite is happening. Family streets are becoming HMO havens, mini-marts and vape shops are everywhere. Tags and e-scooters the visual shorthand for once handsome towns & cities.

@jdthewlis Makes sense, but even professional annotation teams often use model assistance

@robmarkcole It does seem counterintuitive when you'd expect there to be a higher demand for data than ever, but I guess it must be much harder to stop people using LLMs to cheat and the need now is for high quality expert labels that are harder to curate.

The shuttering of Mechanical Turk reminds me how I used it to earn money as a teenager - my most profitable week I labelled almost 20k items to receive $186, which seemed like a huge amount of money at the time!

If you owned a house like these in the seventies, you were doing okay. And just look at those front gardens! 🌻🌹🌷🪻🌸🌼

Working on a European team is crazy. I have never in my life worked for a company where Slack is *completely dead* all weekend. Like, you write something at 16:01 CEST Friday (ie, 7am here in us/west), it will sit unread until Monday morning. It's delightful!

Why Remote Work is White Collar Fraud. "I have a three-year-old and a five-year-old. The idea that I could do any work at my house is like a total fantasy. The kids come home at 3pm, your work day needs to keep going. I'm highly against it." @typesfast

🎙️ New Podcast & YouTube: A Single GPU Is All You Need for Self-Supervised Pretraining In this episode I sat down with Lakshay Sharma, a machine learning scientist at Instacart and former member of Microsoft’s geospatial AI team, to discuss self-supervised learning for remote sensing and his recent research on efficient pretraining for semantic segmentation. Lakshay explains the evolution of self-supervised learning, covering predictive, generative, and contrastive approaches, and discusses how foundation models such as DINO have transformed computer vision and geospatial machine learning. We explore the unique challenges of applying these techniques to remote sensing imagery, where assumptions that work for natural images often break down.

@TeslaJigsaw @TeslaJigsaw BOXT have just called to cancel my install - new regulations from April mean that a battery can't be within 1m of window of door - this effectively applies to all terrace houses! They said they've had to cancel around 40% of their planned installs as a result.

Tesla recently made Solar + Powerwall perfectly affordable in the UK… £199 per month bundle! I just got my personalised quote from BOXT and broke down the full numbers, Aiko panels, Powerwall 3 specs, 0% finance & future VPP upside. I've been dreaming of getting this for a long time... What do you think? Full Video below 👇 @weareboxt @tesla_uk @TeslaOwnersUK
