⚠️ Public Service Announcement for Travelers ⚠️ Do NOT allow your carry-on bags to be sky checked or gate checked at OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg). (That’s when you hand over your carry-on at the gate or plane door because the overhead bins are full or the plane bins are too small for wheeled bags.) Cc @Fly_Airlink @ortambo_int @PatriciaDeLille @tumitravel I’m issuing this warning after my Tumi Alpha hand luggage was tampered with and items were stolen on Airlink flight 4Z176 from Johannesburg to Gaborone at 11am on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The baggage lock was broken using a sharp object, and some of my belongings were taken. Sadly, this is not an isolated case… it’s happened several times to my mom, @magskriel , too, whenever flying through OR Tambo. We’ve learned to remove valuables, but let’s be honest: your hand luggage is specifically meant for valuables you don’t want to risk in checked baggage… laptops, jewelry, cameras, etc. When you sky-check a bag, it feels safe. You’re right next to the plane, what could possibly go wrong? But handlers have mere minutes between collecting and loading those bags. I’ve personally witnessed baggage handlers being searched after loading hand luggage, so clearly the airline knows there’s a problem. Yet the thefts continue. Small, valuable items like designer sunglasses mysteriously disappear. What’s worse, when I reported this to Airlink, they confirmed that a theft syndicate operates out of OR Tambo, and that these incidents happen regularly. This is unacceptable. Airlink, please take action. Perhaps install cameras in baggage loading areas or assign your own staff to monitor handling. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) please hire better, vet better, and protect travelers’ property. Thank you to the Botswana Airlink team for their professionalism and help in getting my damaged bag repaired. But this violation shouldn’t be the price of flying through a major international hub. @FBuyangaa67559 I’ve been flying this route for decades - this hand luggage issue is new. Checked baggage has been known for ages but when they take your stuff away at the bottom of the plane and then go through it - that’s new

@robynkriel1 @daddyhope Very bad behaviour by Airports Company SA staff. They are notorious for stealing and thieving. I have learnt that locking a bag increase risk of its being frisked and stuff taken. Only solution is triple bubble wrap
