@rogeluque @ConservandSoc A few years ago I wrote a short paper asking What is conservation? Now @rogeluque has done a much better job than I did of providing an answer. I highly recommend his thought-provoking paper for anyone with an interest in conservation.

@rdpalacio @ConservandSoc Thanks @rdpalacio ! I try to capture the drive to prevent permanent loss with the clause 'promoting the continued existence' (as opposed to preventing temporary damage), but I'd be very interested to discuss this further if you think it doesn't really do the job!

@rogeluque @ConservandSoc An insightful contribution! You've mention the goal of conservation is to prevent nature's permanent loss (e.g. extinction) Why is this not reflected in your proposed definition? Promoting the existence of living things could lead to protection, but not necessarily.
