Things we’ve learned not to talk about online: Marxism, China, rent controls, price controls, grocery prices the cost of home cooking vs. eating out…anything else?

This is a highly ideological selection. Nothing bad per se, as some students may look for an overview of heterodox economics. However, others (less expert) may pick the course expecting to learn development economics. But this is not what they will learn, neither it is what they need to get a job
Jostein Hauge@haugejostein

I've just updated the outline for my course, “Development Economics”, which I teach at Cambridge. Here are the ten key books for the course.

@TAMMYSZN @a_presbitero Tho, I’m getting more critical of that. It’s the entire cottage industry of progressive “research” then repackaged into TikToks and column pieces which tells soft left people want they want to hear, and everyone ends up with ridiculous information sets and views

@JPFORESTCATCHER @BBCMOTD Why is it that because a player from your team does something you then become a literal retard in an attempt to protect them, its a clear red all day long, looking at how the player on the receiving end recovered deflects from the fact its reckless, misses the ball, heavy force

Fun to be on the @CenturyIntl pod again to talk all things Gulf: development models, security, sovereign wealth funds. I even get into some of the UAE-Saudi divergence/conflict! (recorded before the UAE announced its decision to withdraw from OPEC)
Thanassis Cambanis@tcambanis

How will the Arab monarchies in the Gulf deploy their wealth and power now they’ve learned the limits of America’s security umbrella? @rohadvani on Order from Ashes @CenturyIntl youtube.com/playlist?list=…

“Gulf states find themselves unable to divest w/o damaging their own portfolios & w/ fewer tools to shape the course of a war that they did not start. It appears that Gulf sovereign wealth is far better suited to weathering crises than to managing them, let alone ending them.”
Arab Center Washington DC@ArabCenterDC

📄 In #SaudiArabia, #UAE, #Qatar, and wider #Gulf, economic fallout will most likely take the form of slower deal-making in the future, rather than rapid divestment now. Read more 👇 arabcenterdc.org/resource/prote…

@LapGong @RepealTCPA1947 I mean, like everything else Singaporean it’s statism that works! But I think ‘statism’ is the right word to use given the amount of informal power the government has over the economy. They don’t engage in planning or micromanagement but still Temasek is massive.

People who stan LKY might like to reflect on the fact that Singapore is the most Blairite place on earth. They literally have ‘hubs’, community centres, and a religious harmony day. Imams are licensed by the state. The big difference with Blairism is that it works.
Nikolaj🇺🇦🇵🇸@nikicaga

As someone who likes LKY, its because he's become vastly overdiscussed online (he's become Reddit, so as to say) A lot of the people glazing him also ignore the massive natural advantages of Singapore and ignore many of his policies that don't fit their worldview

For more info on DP World, I did a deep dive into them a few years ago, especially their actions in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa tcf.org/content/report…

That DP World may be working with the Board of Peace while the Trump admin is saber rattling w Iran shows that relationships greased by investment deals can never substitute for the slow boring politics of diplomacy and institution building necessary for coherent policy

Regardless of whether this actually happens, it’s stunning to see how much the relationship has changed. 20 years ago DP World had to drop its planned acquisition of ports in the US due to backlash from Congress. Today, its seen as an important partner giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/ac…
