This is being oversold a bit (as always...) . It’s not a full 397B model just casually running on a laptop. It’s an MoE, so only part of it is active per token (17B activated) , and Flash-MoE is leaning hard on SSD streaming plus aggressive routing tricks. 4 tok/s is closer to “look what I managed to run” than “this is a genuinely productive setup.”

🚨 397 billion parameters. On a MacBook. No cloud. No GPU cluster. No data center. A laptop. Someone ran one of the largest AI models on Earth on a machine you can buy at the Apple Store. It's called flash-moe. A pure C and Metal inference engine that runs Qwen3.5-397B on a MacBook Pro with 48GB RAM. At 4.4 tokens per second. With tool calling. No Python. No PyTorch. No frameworks. Just raw C and hand-tuned Metal shaders. Here's why this should not be possible: → The model is 209GB. The laptop has 48GB of RAM. → It streams the entire model from the SSD in real time → Only loads the 4 experts needed per token out of 512 → Uses just 5.5GB of actual memory during inference → Production-quality output with full tool calling → 58 experiments. Hand-optimized Metal compute kernels. → The entire engine is ~7,000 lines of C and ~1,200 lines of Metal shaders Here's the wildest part: One person built this. A VP of AI at CVS Health. Not Google. Not OpenAI. A healthcare company executive. Side project. Used Claude Code as his coding partner. Built the entire engine in 24 hours. Running a 397B model on cloud GPUs costs hundreds of dollars per hour. Companies spend millions per year on inference infrastructure for models this size. This runs on a $3,499 laptop. Offline. Private. No API key. No monthly bill. Forever. Trending on GitHub. 332 points on Hacker News. 100% Open Source.

Lewis’ campaign platform had seven pillars, focused around party renewal, tax fairness, the digital age, affordable housing, health care, public options “to stop price gouging” and his environmental plan called a “Green New Deal.” boreal.social/post/avi-lewis…

Today r/canada is dominated by a tiny group of power users pushing Great Replacement theory, anti-immigration rage, and conservative media narratives.

"school don't create software engineers. Scars do" Been saying this for a while now. The junior pipeline of software devs is breaking and nobody seems to really have a plan. thinkpol.ca/2026/03/24/the…

Schools don’t create senior software engineers. Scars do. That messy inefficient pipeline that forges a toughened senior out of a delicate CS graduate is collapsing. And nobody in a position to fix it seems to be thinking past the next quarter. thinkpol.ca/2026/03/24/the…

I got 5 frontier AI models to code bots to navigate a foggy maze with teleportals. 1st to the exit wins. Over 500 steps and you're eliminated. Gemini, ChatGPT, and Mimo bots never made it past round 8. Here's Claude's and Grok's bots playing Round 93. boreal.social/post/ai-coding…

Xiaomi just dropped a huge AI model nobody saw coming. And it beats Claude at writing code. It is called Mimo V2 Pro. It has a brain so big it can read 750 books at once. The best part? You can use it for free right now. You do not need to be a tech wizard. Just open a free tool called KiloClaw. Pick Mimo V2 Pro from the list. You are ready to go in 60 seconds. The free test lasts for exactly one week. Go try it before the window closes.
