Supporting scientific software requires more than adapting existing tools. We need domain-aware refactoring detection and recommendation systems that can reason beyond structural similarity and account for scientific semantics.

(4) Main challenges include preserving scientific correctness with limited tests, navigating complex domain-specific concepts embedded in code, low incentives for maintenance work. This and much more from survey of 47 RSEs and interviews with 14 researchers/RSEs in the paper.
