Immortal works of art and literature… Mozart … Dvorak … Prokofiev … Nature’s boundless grandeur… All of the above are wonderful, but they don’t do a thing for me. No, the only thing that inspires me is coffee. ☕️

At a literary gathering not long ago, an aspiring writer made a common, critical error in judgement, mistook me for some useful person—and requested my advice. “How,” he asked, “can I improve my craft?” The only answer I could come up with was, “Writing is just blundering and blundering until you become a master of blundering.” The aspiring writer wilted a little. “It doesn’t get any better than that?” he asked. Luckily, his mother grabbed him by the arm, and I didn’t have to answer the question.

This week's close call is from The Baffler - for a short story. I excel at almost selling. It's my passion. 😎

Friday flashback. My children's story "The Girl Who Cried Diamonds" (first published in 2013 and reprinted in 2024) is about a child whose unique tears cause her to be exploited by profit mongers.
