Cases like this also remind us of a broader concern. During my time in the #Rohingya refugee camps, I witnessed occasions where community members who spoke independently or declined to serve particular interests later found themselves facing serious allegations or legal implications. Whether any individual is ultimately found guilty or innocent must be determined through due process, supported by credible evidence. I hope the current government strengthens the rule of law, ensures fairness, and helps break any cycle of misuse of the justice system.

Yesterday a hillside fell on a girls' Qur'an school in Camp 5, Kutupalong, in the middle of the day. Nine dead: seven students, two teachers. Two days earlier, eight people crushed in their sleep. Seventeen of my people in 72 hours. I have counted this toll year by year. 2018, a child. 2019, two more. 2021, eight in one monsoon. 2024, ten more. Now 2026, and more than sixty of my people killed in camp disasters since 2017. I was Head Majhi for 15,000 refugees in these camps, so I will say what I actually saw. Relocation efforts exist. Authorities and NGOs do try to move families off dangerous slopes before the rains. And many of our people refuse to go, because leaving your only shelter for a temporary site mid-monsoon feels impossible. Then the refusal is accepted, the file closes, and the hill falls anyway. That is the gap killing us. Agencies must stop treating a family's refusal as the end of their duty when the slope is mapped as deadly. And we as a community, our leaders and advocates included, must do the harder work of convincing our own families to move. The rain is natural. Another landslide. Another morning of digging through the debris with bare hands in Kutupalong. Today, a hillside collapsed onto a girls' learning centre in Camp 5, Sub-Block A3, where young students had gathered for their morning lessons. According to local residents, 9 people have been confirmed dead, including students and their teacher, while 4 others have been injured. Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, and these figures await official confirmation. These children left home to learn. They should have returned safely to their families. This is the second deadly landslide in the refugee camps in just three days. On Monday, eight Rohingya refugees were killed in Camps 15, 7, and 11, including five children. After that tragedy, authorities warned that more heavy rainfall was expected and that the hillsides remained at high risk. The danger was known. The rain arrived exactly as forecast, and today more innocent lives were lost. Warnings broadcast over loudspeakers are not enough. Risk alerts cannot replace preventive action. High-risk mapping of these camps has existed for years, yet many families and learning centres continue to remain beneath unstable slopes that should have been addressed long before today. 🇨🇦 Today is Canada Day. For me, this day is not just a holiday. It is personal. I spent most of my life as a stateless person. In Myanmar, I was told I did not belong. In the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, I lived for years without a passport, without citizenship, and without a place in this world that could truly say, "You are welcome here." Then Canada opened its doors to me and my family. In 2025, we arrived here with little more than hope, and Canada gave us safety, dignity, and the opportunity to build a new future. For the first time in my life, I can breathe without fear. For the first time, I can look to the future with hope. Alhamdulillah, today I live in Canada, building a new life in a country that treats me as a human being with rights, not as a burden. Canada did not only help me. In 2006, it became the first country to resettle Rohingya refugees directly from Bangladesh. Canada's Parliament recognized the genocide against the Rohingya people and has continued to support international efforts for justice and accountability. Canada has also provided humanitarian assistance, including food, healthcare, education, protection, and other lifesaving support to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. To the Government of Canada and to every Canadian, thank you from the deepest part of my heart. Thank you for seeing us when much of the world looked away. Thank you for standing with a people who have endured unimaginable persecution. Thank you for giving people like me, who once had no country to call home, the chance to rebuild our lives with dignity and hope. My people are still suffering in the refugee camps and in Arakan, and my commitment to them will never stop. Today, however, I celebrate the country that gave me the freedom to continue that work. Three Injured, Including Two Rohingya Muslim Children, in Reported Airstrike on Village in Buthidaung 1 July 2026 Buthidaung, #Rakhine State – Three civilians, including two Muslim children, were reportedly injured when an airstrike hit Kyet Mauk Taung Muslim village in #Buthidaung Township on Wednesday, according to AB News. The strike also caused damage to around 10 houses. Residents said there were no clashes or armed confrontations in the area when the airstrike took place. One of the injured children is reported to be in critical condition and is receiving urgent medical care. The incident is the latest in a series of reported airstrikes that have impacted civilian communities across Rakhine State. Last Friday briefing from Ms. Julie Bishop, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General gave us an opportunity to take stock of the situation in Myanmar. It is our shared responsibility to support humanitarian efforts and to advance a sustainable solution.

Another Rohingya refugee has reportedly been abducted in the camps of Bangladesh. According to family members, Mohammed Rezuwan, an 18-year-old Grade 9 student from Block H-34 of Camp 10, was taken by unidentified individuals. The family says the abductors later demanded 500,000 BDT (about USD $4,100) and threatened to kill him if the ransom was not paid. This is not an isolated case. Kidnappings, extortion, and targeted violence have become an alarming reality across the Rohingya camps. Many incidents never make headlines because families fear retaliation or lack confidence that help will come. The recent killing of young Alham, reportedly after a ransom demand, exposed the grave security crisis facing Rohingya refugees. Now another family is living the same nightmare. Refugees who fled genocide and persecution should not have to live under the threat of abduction and violence. I am no longer a refugee, but I will never forget what it felt like to be one. On World Refugee Day, I remember the #Rohingya people and millions of others still living in displacement, uncertainty, and fear. The world must move beyond words and take meaningful action.

CHANGE DOT ORG must urgently remove Malaysia’s anti-Rohingya petition. I have written to Change dot org asking them to urgently remove the petition calling for the “removal” of #Rohingya from #Malaysia, now with over 416,000 signatures. This petition targets a stateless refugee community and helps turn xenophobia into a mass, shareable campaign. Change dot org cannot pretend to be a passive noticeboard. Its platform gives the petition visibility, legitimacy, momentum and a public signature count that can be weaponised against Rohingya. At a time of rising online hostility, and disturbing reports of possible vigilante mobilisation, responsible platforms must assess foreseeable harm before real-world violence occurs. Remove the petition. I have also alerted Change dot org to serious, unverified reports of possible vigilante mobilisation against Rohingya traders. That risk environment makes platform responsibility even more urgent.
