Imagine booking a holiday and getting an orange jumpsuit instead of a hotel key.
Here’s what actually happened: Karen Newton, a UK tourist travelling in the US with a valid visa, was detained by ICE, shackled, transported, and held for roughly six weeks. Her trip of a lifetime got replaced by a bureaucratic kidnapping with fluorescent lighting.
No crime spree. No dramatic chase scene. Just paperwork, handcuffs, and a system that treats “visitor” like “suspect” by default.
Senator Chris Van Hollen calls it outrageous. He is right. You cannot market Disneyland on Monday and run Surprise Detention Center on Tuesday.
Eventually other countries stop sending visitors and start issuing advisories. And when that happens, it is not anti American. It is basic self preservation.
