"Suffice it to say, Roberts saw the enormous reception that came from the show’s decision to kill Fergus. But, if anything, it elated him to see how much of an impact that creative choice made. “The overall reaction of the fans, the whole thing, was pretty amazing. They felt the pain. And that’s our job. Dish up the f—king pain!” Matt Roberts on his creative choices, specifically, killing Fergus. Paley Event, LA. "It was massive for Jamie." Um. What? We didn't see Jamie devastated. We didn't see his grief. Not really. What we did see lasted for like two seconds and then it was as though Fergus was forgotten. His first son. His Fergus. Gone. Jamie's reaction was underwhelming to say the least. "It was massive for Claire." Oh. Did Claire actually feel something? Did it happen off-camera? Was she hiding in a bathroom somewhere? Was she into the ether again? Because we the audience certainly didn't see the massive impact that Fergus's death had on her. Her first son. The child who nursed her broken heart after losing Faith. The child who she adored. Oh, Matt. How wrong you were to not give Claire a moment to grieve him. Claire's reaction wasn't just underwhelming, it was non-existent. "It had a huge impact." Soooo huge that he was forgotten by the next episode. "And then we could go somewhere with that story." Where? Where did you go with that story? If Henri-Christian had died we would have still seen Marsali and Fergus go home to the Ridge. We would have seen them deal with their grief. All of them. A mother losing a child is unlike anything else. A father feeling like he failed his child, that he failed to protect his child, is unlike anything other emotion. Marsali and Fergus would have been shattered. I can only imagine how incredible Lauren and César would have been in those scenes. Lauren was brilliant as a wife who had lost her husband. Truly. But. Gosh. As a mother dealing with the loss of a child. She would hsve destroyed us all. As would have César. What a shame. We would have seen so much more than what we got with Fergus's death. We would have seen their family wrap them in their arms and keep them safe. What we saw was nothing compared to what we could have seen. What we should have seen. You had those two amazing actors and you failed to see their potential. Even after all of these years. You missed the mark. Again. "If it was Henri-Christian, it wouldn't have impacted the family in the same way." Henri-Christian. The child we knew was different. The child we knew who had struggled. The child we had seen Roger and Jamie protect. The child we the audience had protected and defended. That Henri-Christian? THAT HENRI-CHRISTIAN??? The death of THAT Henri-Christian wouldn't have been impactful? The death of that Henri-Christian wouldn't have been absolutely devastating to everyone???? What the fuck, Matt? What. The. Fuck. Are you actually serious???? I have no words. None. "But, if anything, it elated him to see how much of an impact that creative choice made." Well. Well. Well. That right there says it all, doesn't it? Elated. He actually said the quiet bit out loud. Elated that his choices made people upset. Matt's ego over quality. Matt's ego over everything else. Every. Single. Fucking. Time. “The overall reaction of the fans, the whole thing, was pretty amazing. They felt the pain. And that’s our job. Dish up the f—king pain!” Oh. We felt things, Matt. Don't you worry about that. We felt lots of things. We still do. And, we Outlander fans don't forget, either. We feel a lot of things about you, Matt, and what you've done to not only Fergus, but, to Outlander itself. Read the room, Matt. You most definitely can't write your way out of this one. I met book-Jamie long before I ever met show-Jamie. I didn't really think that anyone could embody Jamie Fraser as he was written by Diana Gabaldon. His character is unique, and layered, a kaleidoscope of sorts. Somehow, I really don't understand how, but the casting gods deemed it so, and there was Sam Heughan. We actually had our Jamie Fraser. People talk about wishing that they could watch that first episode again, as though they were watching for the first time. To relive the emotions that they had felt that very first time. To feel everything all over again. The magic. I can understand that. I remember sitting in silence thinking, "There he is. That's Jamie. He is Jamie Fraser." I was in awe. A little bit speechless. Sam was Jamie Fraser. All these seasons later, he still is. I always thought that Sam was a remarkable actor. A born storyteller. A thespian. Not just the way that he delivers lines, but the way that he uses his physicality, the way that he moves within a scene. To me, his non-verbal acting is second-to-none. The way that you can see his emotions, the way that you can hear his inner thoughts. All without uttering a sound. Mesmerizing. What I find really interesting is that it isn't until you meet him and talk to him that you realize how good of an actor he truly is. I say this because when you talk with him there isn't a trace of Jamie Fraser. He is not Jamie Fraser in the flesh. He is Sam. Of course, he has an incredible ability to become Jamie in a moment, should he choose to, and I have seen him do so, but he switches back just as easily and it is simply Sam again. I remember the first time I met him. I remember thinking that he was just this really lovely guy, funny, oh so funny, kind, really nice, and not a hint of Jamie. Not one bit. It was really, really interesting. As the finale season draws to a close I will miss Sam's portrayal of Jamie. Nobody else could have portrayed Jamie the way that he did. He became Jamie as though Diana had been writing about him all along. Maybe she was? I think Sam's appeal is that he is a lovely guy who happens to be a really great actor, too. Over the years, I have loved the way that Sam has shown such love, and genuine respect to Outlander fans. Whether it was through MPC, here on Twitter, at conventions, signings, parades, meet-and-greets, zoom calls, or casual hellos in the street. It was Sam who helped us through Droughtlanders, pandemics, (Men in Kilts was a godsend for so many people) and, as it was for so many of us, the ups and downs of life itself. In return we've shown our appreciation a million different ways, whether it be a kind word of two to Sam when you've met him, a gift or two, a bottle of whisky, supporting his projects or businesses, making a difference in your own lives and the lives of others via MPC, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities, saving seats, battlefields, turtles, and a theatre. I have always loved hearing about people's interactions with Sam. The joy that radiates from those that have met him is truly infectious, one can't help but smile when imaging it all. Such an incredibly wonderful community of folks, happy for those that have met Sam, happy for Sam to have met folks that appreciate him, and happy for everyone who admires him from afar. Sam will always be our Jamie Fraser. But, he is so much more than Jamie Fraser. He always was. Luckily for us, we get to follow along and see where his next adventure takes him. Knowing Sam, it could be ANYWHERE and likely to be EVERYWHERE. So, I am sitting here, with one episode of Outlander to go, raising a dram to Sam. After everything that he has given to us over the years I think that he deserves the very best of everything. May his life be filled with love, laughter, joy, family, friends, and success. I would say whisky, too, but I think he's got that covered.

Nothing in this episode brings value to the overall story, it is completely contrived to shock and anger which it has succeeded in. If you are sowing that kind of $ it should bring value to the story people have been loyal to.

@ronile999 If the show ends with Faith walking up the driveway, Fanny running to meet her, closely followed by Jamie and Claire, aka copying hello the house, I will rant like I've never ranted before.

They really should have ended the Outland show with the end of book 8 and “Hello the house”! I have believed this for years and for myself, I really should have stopped watching with the first whiff of ether.

@sulleyS9 What are you smoking? The show gleefully steps on Diana’s storylines. They stepped on them here and there S1-3, then started stomping on them S4&5 and at that first whiff of ether they ground them into ashes as they gleefully tried to burn her story to embers. I’m done with it!

@ronile999 The show was ending & Diana was still writing. Show did not want to step on Diana's storylines since she wasn't finished. So, they went their own way. I thought it was quite courteous of them. So many fans wanted Faith to be still alive btw. The show just fulfilled that wish.

Fergus is alive and well at the end of book 9 & going into book 10. Faith was a miscarriage premie, the fetus did not survive. Lord John is way more careful and discrete than that. Also, Claire’s parents died in a car wreck when she was 5. Shame on you Matt and Maril and Toni

@peekaboo_jen I feel like I’m watching the Jamie and Claire show it’s so far off the Outlander tracks. So I guess there is no danger of them revealing Diana’s final storyline. Maybe Murtagh will reappear. 🫢

@peekaboo_jen Nah, he just took him to the lace maker across the street who I’m sure is completely equipped to care for a victim of smoke inhalation and burns. Lace makers are notorious for their healthcare skills. 🙄

It's terrible to think that Outlander is going to end up like Game of Thrones. #outlander

@SusieD57 I was so livid at the end of S7 I cancelled Starz @Outlander_STARZ within hours. I debated getting it again to see it all through to the end but have resisted and I really feel my decision has been validated based on what I keep reading. I’ll stick with the books.

Game of Thrones Season 8 is widely considered one of the worst final seasons in television. Matt B. Roberts, the show runner of Outlander, apparently took that as a challenge.
