Introducing Groundsource: a new AI-powered methodology that transforms public information into a high-quality record of historical disaster data — starting with flash floods in urban areas. Using Groundsource we trained a new model that makes tangible progress towards predicting flash floods in urban areas up to 24 hours in advance. More details in 🧵⤵️

Breast cancer affects one in every eight women in the UK, and early detection is crucial. ⚕️ Our latest research in @NatureCancer shows how AI can strengthen early detection efforts for breast cancer. In studies with @imperialcollege and the @NHSuk, our experimental research AI-based screening system identified 25% more “interval cancers” - cases typically missed by traditional screening - while reducing screening workloads by an estimated 40%. Key findings from the studies in thread🧵⤵️

We are accelerating mathematical and scientific discovery with AI, using advanced AI models based on ✨Gemini Deep Think✨. Two new papers by Google DeepMind and Google Research highlight a cross-disciplinary effort to solve research problems across mathematics, physics, and computer science. This research extracts techniques for effective human-AI collaboration in theoretical work. Key strategies include agentic execution loops, deep technical review, counter-example generation, and theoretical justification of heuristics. More in 🧵⤵️

Behind every great student is a teacher who went the extra mile. 🌟 We’re excited to celebrate the five #NTOY26 finalists in partnership with @CCSSO. Learn more about the finalists and read the full announcement below 🔽 goo.gle/3LZMmy1

Sequencing the genomes of millions of species sounds like a moonshot - because it is. At Google Research we are helping The Rockefeller University and the Earth BioGenome Project achieve their goal of sequencing all known species on Earth. This is a central part of our strategic focus: using AI to bridge the gap between massive biological datasets and actionable science. We have recently helped preserve the genetic information of 13 endangered species, including the Nubian ibex and the African penguin. This sounds made up. I was on a panel today about the future of AI in science. Was going well, then we saw smoke and there was a bunch of commotion. I was distracted and started watching and the panel kind of stoped. A plant was catching on fire. Then, the head of google research jumped into action and put out the fire. Literally - Yossi Matias - found it and stopped it. Was hard to concentrate after that. Then Yossi went up for his panel and did a great job.

Today, we introduce our position paper “AI and the Future of Learning”, outlining Google’s approach to building AI to help improve learning outcomes for everyone. The core focus at Google Research is driving breakthrough research and bridging fundamental scientific advancement into tangible solutions that address critical global needs. This is the magic cycle of research in action. Our strategy is deeply grounded in pedagogical principles and the very best of learning science. Google is actively developing AI models like Gemini, guided by our LearnLM efforts, to create deeply personalized teaching and tutoring experiences at scale. We aim to empower educators by giving them an AI teaching assistant to free up time for mentoring and connection. We recognize the imperative to confront risks like "metacognitive laziness," ensuring tools promote critical thinking and accelerate human potential. We remain committed to continuous collaboration with experts and an evidence-based approach. Read the full report: services.google.com/fh/files/misc/… Blog announcement: blog.google/outreach-initi…

We're continuing our @GoogleResearch series with two additional Featured Notebooks. Check them out and let us know what you think! 1.)
