In June 2012, 16-year-old Yasser Lopez and his friends went spearfishing at a Miami lake, celebrating the end of their school year. During the outing, one of Yasser's friends was preparing the spear gun when it unexpectedly fired, striking Yasser in the head. He was quickly airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center with the three-foot spear protruding from his forehead. The spear had penetrated two inches above Yasser's right eye and exited at the vertex of his skull at the back. Miraculously, the spear had avoided all major blood vessels in his brain. Yasser was then hurriedly taken to surgery, where medical professionals successfully extracted the spear from his skull and brain in a procedure that lasted around three hours. After the surgery, Yasser spent two months at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, undergoing physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
