@NotJoshBlackman There's no convincing them of gov't authority; I've had limited success with focusing on gov't ability. Agree with the central emotional belief: this is all unfair and made up. Pivot to "that guy over there with the gun and badge is going to do what the judge wants, right or no."

Dear #publicdefender Twitter... Any tips for getting a SovCit client to accept the fundamental basis of reality that the state has the power to prosecute people for criming?

@GrumblesMotion Always keep peanut butter, jelly, and a loaf of bread in the office. You'd be surprised at how often a coworker stops by for a sandwich.

For T W O F U C K I N G Y E A R S progressives have been telling us not to “all lives matter” racism, but as soon as someone says something antisemitic, non-Jews are told that they should care because “this could affect ALL of us.” I’m sick of you. See yourselves out.

@PDefenselessPod It's niche, but bad every time: Private counsel taking hideous amounts of money explicitly to be retained through preliminary hearing, doing a laughable job at the prelim, and then being relieved as counsel upon arraignment in superior court.

To all the public defender, contract, or assigned counsel out there: What are the injustices and cruelties you see everyday in court that people who've never interacted with the legal system are completely unaware of?

dear podcasters, please don't highlight the structural and evidentiary deficiencies in the case against whoever the State frames for my murder, ghosts are notoriously into needless suffering and misplaced vengeance and I don't wanna miss out

victim's counsel objecting to proceeding on the State's motion to dismiss the conviction of Adnan Syed encapsulates everything that makes me uncomfortable about the imaginary legal symmetry of criminal litigation

@G0THLAWYER Local cop restaurant used to offer a "PD Special" cop meal- just an incredible amount of tacos & enchiladas for $3. We would go 1x/wk & order it with a straight face and got away with it for a few months until the manager asked to see our badges. Not one of us looked like a cop.

@blakezeff I agree with the point you are making, but I want to correct one thing: Public defenders are eligible for loan forgiveness. But prosecutors are not. This is bizarre because prosecutors represent the government and stand up in court and say they are"for the People".

I’ve covered student debt obsessively for the past 6 years for a documentary (coming soon!). One of the most misunderstood parts of this debate is: folks with graduate degrees. Many seem to think this group is all rich (or soon to be). This is weird & incorrect. Quick thread…

roses are red skateboards are rad an opposition to limited, means-contingent loan forgiveness that involves you tacitly endorsing the poverty draft is pretty fucking bad

this is good and all but consider riding this wave and just forgiving all of it student loan amnesty. a presidential debt pardon. absolute absolution.

even knowing full well that the cultural prohibition on discussing income is a tool to keep folks from comparing salaries and organizing the Midwestern urge not to talk about compensation is strong there are two wolves inside you, one is solidarity and the other says "ope" a lot

look I worked 10 years in public service to get a hideous amount of loans forgiven and I am furious about this new forgiveness scheme because my good fortune only feels good if it is arrayed against a tableau of suffering

@tewhalen garbage pretext searches are dismayingly routine but that absolutely on brand Chicago Police 24-hour diner placemat is a real showstopper can't train the cops on respecting the 4th Am but the coffee stain lower right taps into something elemental

This is apparently "policework": a pretextual "traffic stop" (maybe a ticket) in a minority neighborhood leads to "noticing" pot (legal to possess in Illinois, but not to use in a motor vehicle - a misdemeanor) leads to a "narcotics" search, which turns up the gun (felony)
22nd District - Morgan Park@ChicagoCAPS22

In the early hours of the morning, Officers conducted a traffic stop near 116th & Kedzie. A strong odor & visible presence of burnt cannabis led to a narcotics search of the vehicle which revealed a loaded handgun. A 30 yr old male (convicted felon) was taken into custody.

@VirtualBondGirl Initial discovery, yeah, they just give the police report and a rap sheet around here. Photos are provided separately after you make a little fuss / file a mx to compel / file a Trombetta for good measure.
